So I’ve been blessed to find a few dumb turkeys to kill through out the years, but I don’t hunt afternoons much due to fear of bumping birds. I’m definitely not going to deer hunt one. So how do y’all do it? Thanks for the advice, always trying to learn more.

I hunt them the same exact way, as I do any time after fly down. On large tracts or public, I cover a lot of ground and use aggressive cuts/yelps to locate.

On small tracts, I carefully poke into places I expect there to be a bird, & use some aggressive cuts/yelps to locate. And if I don’t strike one, I go home, go to another place, or find a comfy spot where I can hear well and try them again in an hour.

Left work at 3:15 yesterday. Struck him at 3:45, dead at 3:50.

They gobble just as good at times in the woods.

Hunting evening birds can be tricky . Some times you have more luck calling the hens . Don't expect gobbling either most I kill late in the day never made a sound

I've seen toms walk to the roost and fly up seen them fly off high ground and sail half a mile to the roost .

Frankie, I guess that’s why I haven’t hunted them most afternoons due to the less gobbling. I enjoy the sounds and actions of mornings. I hunt small properties, so I don’t get to run and gun much anymore either.

I always had the same opinion on hunting the afternoons. Thought they didn’t gobble much. In fact, I hardly ever heard a bird gobbling in the afternoons, until the last 6 or 7 years. Turns out ridgestalker is right, lot of times they gobble just as much in the afternoons as mid morning, just got to be there to hear them.

I tried a tactic where a neighbor called after lunch time and said there were 3 strutting in the hay field next to my property. I still failed.

If small property I mostly leave them alone. They already have enough against them and I want them breeding. I would trade hunting the afternoon and work on trapping.

Use your feet. Walk and cut aggressively every 100 yards. Use roads/trails to cover more ground. I never ever deer hunt turkeys! Not judging anyone but for me the action is the juice. If they aren’t gobbling, I usually move on. Good news is that if you have a bird working in the afternoon, I think you have a better chance of killing it because they usually are not with hens.

Hunting brings out the worst in people.

yeah some will but i cant say a lot of them . depends on the tom . ive had them gobble like crazy but never move from that happy spot . might gobble once then sneek in, just never know .

thing is you know the turkeys are there you can kill them if they gobble or not . just gotta see him first , why i like close setup 35 yards or less he cant spot me till he's in range . if you use decoys and steal shot i guess that may help with distinct .

patience and confidence will kill you a lot of birds .

Generally where i hunt - afternoon gobble aint great most of time - silent mostly

I hav killed several in afternoon - but usually slip n solent or gobble 1-2. Dont afternoon hunt much anymore - just a lot slower most of time. Morning hunt the bomb

Out of state and up north they gobble way better n afternoon

Hunt the wind - leave it better than you found it - love your neighbor as you love your self

Killed several in the afternoon. Walk to areas you’ve known for them to be and cut aggressively or yelp. If you strike one get ready. They are probably coming.

Everyone has different tactics but I have had a lot of success in the afternoons. However, I don't want to bump one and they tend to be quiet so I know where I want to go to set up (where I know there are often turkeys - crossroads and drain crossings) and slip in quiet to that spot. I don't cover a lot of ground and don't do any calling on the way in or out. I will spend an hour or so and if I don't hear one or one doesn't slip in quiet, I leave and go home. Often, however, it happens like this afternoon. I slipped to the crossroads where I wanted to be (have killed 3 or 4 at this spot and worked many others) and set up on a tree, in the shade where I could shoot the x-roads. Got there at 5 pm, called softly, then louder, then cut. Got some turkeys cutting back and then 2 gobbled from about as far as I could hear one. This was 5:15. They walked (gobbling the whole way) to 23 yds at 5:40 where I killed one and educated the other wink

Big thing…listen for drumming. I’ve been tipped off by a number of birds just with the drumming in the afternoon. Otherwise I hunt like atoler…though if a small piece and I know birds are coming to a certain field/area…I’ll slow down and sit and call sometimes etc

I have found that they are most likely to gobble in the afternoon early in the season. Since they took the first 10 days, I haven't heard as many in the afternoon.

I thought it was predictable that they would gobble yesterday after the rain ended and the sun came out. I thought I heard one answer a crow yesterday about 1 pm, so I used my crow call until he gobbled again and I was certain it was a turkey. After that, it was no different than hunting in the early morning. I have also found that a turkey who will gobble in the middle of the day can usually be killed.

Gobbling in the afternoons really starts to pick up the later in the season we get. The hunting really gets good for me around the front part of April until the end of the season(mornings and afternoons). I don’t do a whole lot didn’t tactics wise between mornings and afternoons.
