New vehicles are grossly overpriced. The only way buying new pays off is if you keep the vehicle for 10 years or longer. If you can't finance it for 4 years, you can't afford it. A $600 or higher payment is ridiculous.

I’m fortunate enough to have a truck provided by the company I work for, that I’m allowed to use for personal stuff as well. They replace it every 5 years with a brand new one. I do own a truck but it’s 14 years old and honestly don’t see myself ever buying another new one. I don’t even want to buy a used one. Funny, I’ve thought back on every truck I’ve ever owned and every one got a little less fancy, and more practical, the older I got. Now the wife has a nice Expedition that pays off in a few months so we’ll be free of that payment for hopefully a long time. She works just to pay for the extras (cars, trips, etc..). I tell my boys, mostly my oldest, NOT to get caught up in the whole “got to have a fancy truck” thing. Thankfully, vehicles don’t impress him much. I hope he stays that way.

I own several vehicles, no payment. They are not the latest greatest, never will be. They all get the job done and make me money one way or another

Haven't been in the new vehicle rat race for many years. Learned at an early age that new cars were a money pit. Drove my old Tacoma for 20 years before buying another used truck. The Tacoma had 47K on it when I got it. My current truck (and its mods) is the most I've ever spent on a vehicle but its a far cry from the new truck prices. It also got paid off a year to the day after I got it. Thankful to have it.

I like new vehicles, and some of the bells and whistles that come with them. Then I die. The end.

I don't think people are stupid for buying a new vehicle. People should do what they want to make them happy.

I think the point of the article is that sometimes a new vehicle doesn't bring all the happiness that is promised.

On the other hand, based on personal experience, financial freedom does definitely enhance your personal happiness.

This bring up an interesting point. In 1970 average new ford truck was $2600. Average salary $9870.

Today the average F150 is 50,000 with the average salary $65,700.

This isn't taking into account the high cost of Healthcare. House's are the same way. The average house is over 5 times the average salary in 1970 it was about double.

These numbers show that somwthing is way wrong with out economy.

Agreed. I know multiple people who refuse to buy a new vehicle for many of the reasons listed in this thread. Yet, they aren’t exactly saving money by not buying a vehicle. They’re just choosing to spend that money on a different hobby/interest that makes them happy smile

I don't think people are stupid either for buying what makes them happy. So we agree with that. I'm blessed to be able to enjoy financial freedom and I have all the scars and back pain for it just like you and many others on here. Not being a part of the machine goes a long way as you get older.

I had my last truck for 12 years and I swore I would not drive the equity out of my current one.
But Covid pricing happened and here I am driving it completely paid for.
But what I am doing differently this time is I never stopped making the payment. It is just going to a separate account intended for vehicle use.
But at that time it may go towards an income producing asset or something like that.
Not sure yet, but I can tell you that I am glad I am saving it.

I am lucky that my company buys me a new truck every 2 years that I get to use for personal use also. I usually buy my wife a nice vehicle that she keeps for 250k-350k miles. I spend more upfront for her car because I want her in something safe and reliable and comfortable. Plus she works and and can afford it on her own if need be. I will say our payment is over a grand a month just because i want it paid off quickly.

That’s a good move and I wish I had done the same thing with my 12 year old truck. Been paid off for 7 or 8 years can’t remember, but I didn’t do what you did. Wish I had. With kids etc there’s always something competing for that monthly money. It would dang sure be nice to have 8 years of payments in the hole as I face a new vehicle here soon!

It’s about to serve my son well too. After 266k in the seat I’m sort of tired of it. Hopefully he can learn to drive a stick on it without too much mayhem. If you see us around Hoover with a 15 year old in the driver seat stay back on hills!

And the truck market frustrates me now anyway. Buy a GM and you deal with transmission issues, and the whole cylinder deactivation headache. Fords, have phaser issues, and I don't think I like the idea of an aluminum bed. If I buy a midsize, the only real benefit is its smaller, they really don't get any better mileage. Diesels are expensive and require DEF. I don't like this 0w-16 or 20 motor oil. That is to thin. I don't like low tension piston rings either. Both those cause excessive oil consumption in my opinion.

It used to be you could have a clean and uncluttered engine bay. Engines used to look like a work of art. Now they are a jumble of hoses and wires. They put big plastic covers on the engines so you can't see the mess, and the cover just holds heat in under it, cooking everything they want to cover up. Not to mention, its just more crap you have to take off to get to the engine to work on it.

This is why I bought a 1996 F-150 4x4 300ci inline 6 manual transmission for my project - retirement - haul stuff - run to Lowes - truck. Probably going to put my "nice" 2018 Ram 1500 up for sale and make my 2013 Rubicon my daily driver in retirement.

I really want to do something like this, but I don't want a manual transmission. You don't need much to have a modern fuel injection set up on one either.
