What kind of price can I expect to pay to have my current water tank (gas) switched out for a tankless water heater? I don’t know if it matters or not but it’s in the garage on an interior wall, if it makes a difference. Obviously, the gas line and vent for the current tank are already there. For those that have them, is there one brand that stands out over the others? Pros/cons?

Rinia or Rheem, the venting for the heater will be the most expensive cost. I'm a licensed plumbing contractor in three states, there are no cons!

I just paid $400 for labor. It involved several trips to the house and some creativity. He did the job quickly so I was happy. Hard to function without hot water.

May want to also consider a line for the condensation line and tie it in with the pressure relief valve so if there is an issue it won’t release onto your floor.

Navien is a good one, requires pvc venting. I have seen people use the old type b vent as a chase for the pvc. Not sure if that is code or not

I put my noritz on the outside wall. Been a good one for the last 11 years. Just developed an error code. Should be an easy fix for me. I would buy another without blinking an eye

We've had a rennai propane one for about 6 years. Works good but every other year or so it starts beeping, hot water shuts off until you reset it and says code 10. Have to take blower motor out and its usually a dang moth or other bug in the cage and blow it out.

Shout out to noritz. Called them and they walked me step by step to diagnose my problem. The heat exchanger developed a leak. It was NOT under warranty but they are going to send me a new one anyway free of charge. Its about 500 if i had to buy it. Outstanding customer support.

A note to all who own these. They are NOT maintenance free. Heating water releases sediment and minerals. In a standard water heater they collect in the bottom and are supposed to be flushed regularly. The condition is made worse in hard water areas.

Tankless water heaters have nowhere for the sediment to collect. It heats faster and releases more sediment in my opinion. That sediment will collect all through the home where hot water is flowed. Sinks, Tubs, Showers and don't forget the dishwasher and washing machines. Those screens need to be cleaned periodically. I would get a coffee cup of sediment a month. Since the sediment has nowhere to collect, it tends to hang around the heater core on tankless. And will damage them. They need to be flushed properly ( I used vinegar) twice a year to prevent the core from being damaged. Lots of videos. I do NOT use chemicals to clean it. Vinegar works just fine.

Supposedly thats too much flushing. They recommend once every 2 years. If water is that bad they recommend a filter . Water hardness test is in order also . I never flushed mine in 11 years. Maybe thats why the heat exchanger is leaking. I dont know

Can't say for certain about yours. Mine was a different brand and it was every 6 months. First unit lasted 8 months, ruptured core. Never flushed it. New core, never ruptured in the next 8 years we were at that home. I flushed it every 6 months. Probably did need a filtration system. If I ever build again, I'll have both.

I have 2 Rinnai tankless, gas, water heaters in my house. They are 13 years old and I flush them with vinegar 1/year and also have a whole-house filtration system. Never had any issue with them so far - not one. They have been great. Pretty nice to be able to come in when you're chilled to the bone and be able to take a hot shower until you've had enough without having to worry about running out of hot water!
