They’re out right now at my house. I certainly don’t remember them this early before. Not in March.

Seems early, but I haven’t necessarily kept up with it

My wife used to work with a lady that was real superstitious. I saw a lightning bug before Easter and made up a story about how bad an omen that was. Just made it up. That year my dog got run over (by me), mooslims knocked down the World Trade Center and Dale Earnhardt got killed.

I saw one a couple days ago and thought, “That’s incredibly odd.”

Saw one this morning in turkey woods. My grandson said, "What is that light in the tree?" Me, "You have to be looking at the lights of a plane." Remembered it was cloudy. Sure enough, a lightning bug. Never in my many decades have I seen one this early.

When I left for work this morning, walking to my truck I glanced over to the wood line and thought I saw a little flash of light. I thought it was a lightning bug but then remembered it was only March so, I brushed it off and kept on walking.

Even in the summer I don’t see them anymore like I did when I was a kid. We used to put 100’s in a jar and put them in our room at night when we went to bed.

They were plentiful when I was a kid even in town but that all stopped when the city started spraying for mosquitoes. They’ve cut back on that a bit lately, though, and I saw quite a few last summer right here in midtown. I’d like the trend to continue this way.

Saw a bunch of them at camp last night. Seemed awful early in the year.

I don’t know how true it is, but this article attributes the decline to pesticide use and light pollution. Sounds reasonable but who knows

When I was a kid back in the early '60's, we had a Chinese Chestnut tree in the back yard. Hated those hulls full of spikes. For some reason the lightening bugs just loved that tree. At certain time of the year, there would be many thousands on there. Me and other kids could fill up a coke bottle and it would be bright at night. Turn them loose the next day.
