I enjoy watching videos on YouTube about these modern day pirates that hijack these large cargo ships, and all the different methods the ships use to try and deter them. Water canons, barb wire, etc…. What I don’t understand is why don’t these ships arm themselves? Anyone know if it’s against international law or something? They never mention anything about firearms. Seems to me these little motor boats wouldn’t stand a chance against an elevated position with good firepower.

If voting made any difference, they wouldn’t let us do it.-Mark Twain

The problem, or A problem, is that the ship is subject to any host country's firearms laws when they are in port/that country's waters. Many countries have prohibitive firearms regulations, particularly on the type of guns you might want to repel boarders.

I've wondered that myself.

I bet if they all stopped going to those ports , they'd change the regs/laws.

Why not have a security detail board a boat and stay out of port and then get back on board after the cargo ship has left port?

I’ve seen some that had armed guards repelling pirates.

It’s that similar to bringing a knife to a gun fight?

I was just thinking if they couldn’t have real guns on the cargo ships for some reason, like you never see them with, that would work in a pinch….

Check out youtube, there are several cargo ships that are protected by retired navel seals and special forces. I watch one the other day where 3 pirate boats approached and these guys made Swiss cheese out of them. The video ends with the boats being neutralized and no return fire, the pirates ended up fish bait…..Really cool….

If at first you dont succeed, You may not want to try parachuting

Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call
Wanted to sail upon your waters since I was three feet tall
You've seen it all, you've seen it all
Watched the men who rode you, switch from sails to steam
And in your belly, you hold the treasures few have ever seen
Most of 'em dream, most of 'em dream
Yes, I am a pirate, two hundred years too late
The cannons don't thunder, there's nothin' to plunder
I'm an over-forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late
I've done a bit of smugglin', and I've run my share of grass
I made enough money to buy Miami, but I pissed it away so fast
Never meant to last, never meant to last
And I have been drunk now for over two weeks
I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks
But I got to stop wishin', got to go fishin'
Down to rock bottom again
Just a few friends, just a few friends
I go for younger women, lived with several a while
Though I ran 'em away, they'd come back one day
Still could manage to smile
Just takes a while, just takes a while
Mother, mother ocean, after all the years I've found
My occupational hazard being my occupation's just not around
I feel like I've drowned, gonna head uptown
I feel like I've drowned, gonna head uptown

They (pirates) have to get right along side these tankers to board them. I always wondered why they dont they just drop a pickle jar full of Gas and shoot a flare into their boat. That would be fun to watch. I love the videos too.

They probably do for passing through extremely dangerous waters, but it's probably really expensive and a pain in the butt too. I thnk most shippers figure it's worth the chance to hit the gas, fire the water hoses and hope for the best. If the piracy is persistent the Navy will fix the problem.

Surprised that no one is flying drones into the Pirates and blow them up. I always thought throwing handgrenades or Molotov cocktails into their boats when along side would work.

^^^ I like the way you think beers I was thinking a couple of ma deuces mounted on both front and back of the cargo ship and just light them up. It would make quick work of the ship that is carrying the pirates and you always see that they are carrying several loads of fuel on board too. Ocean side bbq!
