I was out of state to pick up a piece of equipment I broke and pulled in for a Quick Look in an outdoor store. Talked to an old hunter, mid to upper 60’s possibly 70. Was already needing more ammo… season been open for two days. He said he’d done killed 4… whipped out his phone and started showing pictures.. I politely told him not to kill them all when I started to walk off. In a very serious and stern voice he says “As long as these hunters won’t kill the Jakes, it won’t hurt a thing.” I noticed an empty sack of scratch in the bed of his truck as I was getting in the vehicle to leave.

I think both you and the old man are probably right. Most of the old men turkey legends around here quit chasing turkeys when they couldn’t tote a rifle and the worst ones were the real poor folks who would set out trot lines for them. There are still old folks around here that run feists and rabbit beagles around here to eat and have never had power or running water. Y’all think those folks like that care about game check? Most of them can’t even read. I knew an old man who raised quail and fighting roosters up until cancer ate him up and he killed himself a few years ago. There’s not a biologist in the state that could imagine how many turkeys, hawks, and owls that man had shot with a 6mm Remington rifle. Y’all should have seen his “trophy room” from shooting deer off peanut fields at night. Nearly every buck he had mounted was sporting a summer coat and a velvet rack.

Folks that hav to break laws to eat - more power to em. But the other law breakers that do piss me off. A 6 year old can easily kill a trophy at night w a spot light

I knew of a few around here that did similar. Still some that rife around with a loaded rifle, year around. They starting to die off though and wonder if they’ve trained up some replacements.

There’s some local folks up around my place that will kill every turkey they see or hear and hunt whoever’s land they want as soon as deer season goes out. Deer hunt the same way. Will shoot everything they see day or night, doesn’t matter and they are proud to brag about it

Agreed a gobbling Turkey will make folks do stupid things. Most would never even get in your yard. But let a Turkey gobble and here they come cross fences, ignore signs, trespass just for a bird. So many hunters are out for the limit. Bragging rights.
