Damnit. I know a thing or three about how the Indians used and ate darters and small minnows. If you like sardines, tell me this don't sound good. I might try it with Sardines one day, but I have been saying that for 20 years.
They used to be so plentiful that Indians could scoop them right out of the water in a cup, press them between big green leaves just enough to push the guts out of them, then wash the mess off. After that they would give the minnows a quick dusting of cornmeal, then flash frying them in a basting of chestnut oil and eat them like a taco or burrito in a hand ground corn tortilla.

They also used them to catch rattlesnakes and gopher tortoises by putting a small handful of them in front of a gopher hole. The snakes or the gopher would come out to see what the smell is.

Depending on how interested you are in the subject, you may consider finding a used copy of this book. It details every single species of fish in Alabama along with a map of where they have been found. Color photos, write up, records, etc. It’s out of print now. It’s a great coffee table book. The snail darter held up construction of the tva tellico dam for two years . But since 2022 they been taken off endangered species list .when we log a tract in middle tn we get a map showing the possible endangered or threatened species in the creeks or water ways . It’s always been the snail darter at top of list . Better stay out them creeks with logging equipment. Paper company IP had an PR person on site one time in westpoint tn where they released some them darters . On front page of local paper back in the 90s.

It was pretty firm. Slicing it was challenging, it had some tough chunks. Didn't smell like nothin. Dude also had muscadine seeds. They make the slicing saw bump.
