Yall done got me buying some sardines. I got a couple of King Oscar's today, one in olive oil and then another in olive oil with jalapeños. My dad has always loved them and I’ve always thought they were gross by the smell. I’ve been on a high protein diet the last 2 months, so I’m ready to try these and potentially add them to my arsenal. Will report back.

I often thought the same thing about eggs. Who was the first guy who saw an egg come out of a chicken's butt, cracked it open, looked at the goo inside and said, "Oh man, that looks good!"

The more than likely scenario in each of those cases is that man saw other animals eating them and then made sure the animal didn't die so he tried them himself. The problem with the eggs story is that the cast iron skillet wasn't invented until way later.

A warning for everyone eating sardines. I read yesterday that too much consumption can lead to a build up of uric acid and cause gout. The culprit here is purine. I think Mackerel is way lower in purines. I haven't tried canned mackerel yet, but it's on the list.

I would assume that's in extreme cases and like just about anything moderation is the key. I would assume that the overall health benefits to eating sardines, would be a positive.

Speaking of sardines where do y’all find the best deals for buying in bulk? I took care of an older brother at church and help his family after he passed. He had 2 boxes that contained 100 cans each of season best sardines. He bought everything in bulk and I’m thinking Costco but never been to one myself.

As a matter of fact, I'm at work today and sardines will be my lunch. I've eaten tons of sardines through the years and once read an article by one of the nation's top heart doctors at the time, he stated that sardines were the healthiest food in the world.

I don't like King Oscars though; I only eat Crown Prince in olive oil. Comes in a blue box and up until the pandemic bought them from Walmart. Now I have to order them from Amazon by the case and way more expensive now also. They used to have a program where you could save the bar code from the box and mail them in for .50 cent coupons. I've saved hundreds of them things through the years and saved some money too.

I eat them mostly with crackers, crystal hot sauce or crackers and mustard, sometimes over a bed of lettuce. Today will be crackers and hot sauce.

I think I will give one of the recommended brands a try. I have always been put off by the smell, but will give them a shot. Speaking of sardines at lunch… walked into the office one day and got hit in the face by the smell. I asked who was eating bait and about 10 hands went up pointing in the same direction. I told the culprit, a good buddy, that his sardines were for the breakroom or outside, so he tossed the now-empty can into the trash can next to his desk. There was a classic look on his face when I had him take his trash out of the building right then(:

Yes, Crown Prince in the blue box.

And the King Oscar kipper snacks. Mild flavor and smell imo. And the smokiness is goooood to me....

Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many!

none of the boneless skinless fillets do that I've noticed. They all have less fishy smell than a similar can of tuna.

I'm giving those a try next. Maybe Mrs. Irish will try those.

She'll eat the hell out of a dozen raw oysters, but won't touch a sardine.

I'm going to try those.

Every time I hear the word "Herring" I can't help of think of "The Knights of Nee."

A can of what?

Sardines ain't exactly a bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos and a Mountain Dew.

If you like olives and olive oil they’re really hard to beat.

I've tried them all. These are the best. With that said, my absolute favorite is smoked salmon:
