If it is a good thing then it needs some better explaining, because right now it looks like another damn tax created to benefit assholes at the expense of regular people.

Are pharmacies forbidden from adding their own "dispensing" fees? Why does the state need to mandate it and why that odd dollar amount?

I use a small independent pharmacy. I also pay for my prescriptions with cash. I don’t have insurance coverage. If this happens it’s going to force me to use either a mail order pharmacy OR I’ll travel the 10 miles to Florida and get my prescriptions there.

If it’s processed through insurance we cannot charge any more or any less for that prescription. That $10 number has always been the general rule for the cost to fill a prescription.

This doesn’t change anything with our cash-paying patients.

Health care cost and insurance are out of control. What kind of a$$ scum would enact a tax on sick people? Nothing will change unless we load our redneck passed off asses up peaxfully protest at the capitol. This is beyond disgusting.

From what I read in the article it doesn’t matter if you use cash or insurance. Or atleast that’s what I thought I read.

A lot of independent pharmacies have already closed over this issue and the trend will continue if nothing is done. Pretty soon you will have to rely on the chains and you won’t get the customer service you would get from someone like me or CAL.

How is this going to help anyone but the state…..?

The bill will require pharmacy benefit managers to pay the pharmacies for the actual cost of the medication plus a dispensing fee. I work at an independent pharmacy so this will affect us…

And the consumer’s cost won’t go up? Let’s be real. It’ll go up $10, or maybe more. Any extra fees will be passed on to the consumer. Which is why I’m against it.

$10.00 to fill a script? How many scripts do you fill a day? Sounds like a huge money maker over time.

That would have been a massive tax bill for my mother in the last year of her life. Some might call it a kind of wealth tax or estate tax.

Kerry Rich is no longer in the house. He has been out for 2 years I believe. This is either not true or his name got put on by mistake.

The CVS I use does at least 500-600 prescripts a day. $5-6000 more a day is a pretty good raise.

The complexity of pharmacy cannot be explained in one article. If you dont think that money is already out there and getting pocketed by PBMs then you should do some research into them. They have all the money and will do anything to keep it that way. A pharmacy doing 5-600 rxs per day and making $10 on every one is simply a joke. Of those 5-600 more than half will be name brand which will almost always result in the pharmacy loosing money on them…. How can cvs and walgreens do it you ask? They own their own PBMs and what they are losing on the pharmacy side they make up for on the PBM side. Thats why a lot of yall get told where you have to get your meds. They dont want a level playing field because they know the ultimate outcome would be huge savings for the patient and those savings would be coming out of their pocket. Its not the pharmacy that tries to muddy the waters on drug pricing transparency its them. Its not a tax but the PBMs just get someone to write an article calling it a tax and that is usually all it takes. The truth is your cost on anything shouldn’t have to go up, the billions the PBMs are pocketing should come down. Im not here to argue with anyone. Just hoping to shed a little light on the situation. By all means do your own research and make your own decision but just make sure its an informed decision. Im by no means an expert on this i just know what i see every day and its sad on several levels. For a little more explanation check out alabama pharmacy association’s facebook page and listen to the podcast about this bill.

Alliance of Alabama Healthcare Consumers
VOTE “NO” on the House Bill 238 PRESCRIPTION FEE
The Insurance Committee of the Alabama House of Representatives approved HB238 on Wednesday, March 6, with a unanimous voice vote. The bill now goes to the House calendar where it will await further action. House Bill 238, sponsored by Rep. Phillip Rigsby (R-Huntsville) would impose a $10.64 fee on every single prescription dispensed in Alabama, costing employers and their employees millions of dollars each year.
Here are the critical points to consider.

INCREASED CONSUMER COSTS: The bill proposes an additional $10.64 fee on every prescription which means an estimated extra $275 per person annually or $1,100 for a family.

IGNORES THE CORE ISSUE: The bill fails to tackle the root problem – the exorbitant drug prices set by drug manufacturers.

IMPACT ON BUSINESSES: Alabama businesses will bear increased costs for providing prescription drug coverage and raising employee benefit costs.

This bill is NOT a solution. It’s a costly burden on consumers and employers.

We at AAHC are committed to fighting against policies that raise the cost and access to employer provided healthcare benefits.

There’s so much misinformation you just stated. The ONLY way I can imagine that this would increase cost to the consumer would be if you do no have a set copay. Even then, you would be paying toward your deductible. I’m tired of getting paid phucking pennies to fill prescriptions. Often times, I run a prescription through and will get reimbursed less than a dollar to fill it. Yes, I went to school for 7 years, opened a business, front the overhead, accept the liability to make pennies. This bill would fix that and many other issues with PBM reform. The issue is NOT with high drug costs it is with PBMs bending us, the consumer and the employee over at every damn turn. You need to be more educated about a subject before making a statement
