Anybody ever use a turning plow (disc type) on rotting stumps.
Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

Yes, cleared a few fields like that. You’ll break some shear bolts on the plow occasionally but I had good luck with it breaking up stumps or ripping them out of the ground completely. But they weren’t huge stumps and were mostly pine. Probably run into some issues with hardwood stumps but if they’re pine it shouldn’t be a problem.
Edit: Just noticed you meant a disc type, I used a traditional turning plow. Disc should be similar but may have greater odds of breaking a disc off

I have a 3 disc discplow and have used it just the way you mention, though I think all my stumps were 3 to 4 years old. It definitely works better than a moldboard plow around stumps, and the plow will usually just roll over the stump instead of catching it and breaking something.
With that said, one of my discs is missing a chunk after an encounter with a stump that wasn't rotten.

I used a 2 gang break plow (disk) on a 4 year old cutover with pine stumps, it worked great but after about 3 hours it broke off the first row disk. Im still looking for a 24” replacement. Nobody seems to make those anymore.
If at first you dont succeed, You may not want to try parachuting

A heavy forestry disk would probably work better if you have access to one. I have a single gang , 8' Taylor Way that is a beast when it comes to stuff like that. Very easy to change the angle , with all the angle it plows like a disk turner, with little angle like a regular disk. Stumps and rocks don't effect it.

It's certainly built heavy enough.

Be careful. I worked with a man at Ford Motor Company in 1979 that was plowing some new ground he had cleared. His plow hung a stump and it flipped the tractor over on him. He was pinned under it all day before his wife found him that evening. He was a good man who left here too quick.

what this guy needs is something called a "Bog Harrow". Probably what you've got 2Dogs.

Fine looking disc and it should work well for what you wanna do. All I would say is to use some common sense when running it around big stumps.
I had 20 acres of 30 yr old pines clearcut and cleaned it up with a D3 dozer. It wasn't big enough to dig up the pine stumps, so I just left them and farmed around them several years. I didn't start intentionally running over the pine stumps with the discplow until the 3rd or 4th year, and even then I always tried to hit them a glancing blow, not take them straight on. The discplow tore them up one root at a time and all those fields were completely clean by the 5th year and I spent very little money on them.
There is the potential for danger, but go slow and take your time and you shouldn't have a problem. I've done a lot of dangerous stuff through the years and had some close calls, but never had a scary moment with the discplow.

Im definitely going slow when I start. Dont want to tear up the tractor or even this old plow. Priced a new one and they were over 6k.

Those are good disc for new plots. I use the same style but its a 1952 Dearborn. Will just roll right over roots or stumps. Dont know why they arent more used than they are. With some watching you can pick them up for $300-500.

Got a few new plots on the farm after some clear cutting and I’ve taken small chunks off the hardwood stumps for three years now and they’re almost gone. Pine stumps will be gone sooner but slow rolling a disc over any of them will greatly speed up decomposition.

Yes. I will say this for future reference only because this knowledge is not readily available on the internet.... the Bog Disk is the correct implement for reclaiming pasture land, chopping up roots, etc. That's what they were built and used for. And that's what you want for clearing new ground for food plots. Designed for use in an ear of low Horsepower tractors when a 50hp tractor was about as big as you could buy. Translates directly to today and what we are using this for. Also good for Fire lines, etc.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.
