Anyone know of anyone who buys black walnut trees? I have 4 that I’m gonna cut down, but wanted to see if there was other options before I just cut em and took em to the sawmill. 2 are big trees. 24” across on one side and 12-14’ tall till the first limb. And the other two are just a little smaller.

Not looking to get rich, just seeing my options. Thanks

I do not know of anyone but I bet you can probably trade them for their removal. Meaning, give them to someone in exchange for cutting them down, grinding the stumps, and removing all debris.

I can do all that myself, and have it cut into lumber and sell it. Just didn’t know if anyone out there targeted this wood before it was cut up. Per say.

I like my black walnuts. Money would be nice but I can always make money but not old trees

Hard to sell trees if they come from an old home place

Good luck. Walnut is bringing a good price right now. typically trees growing in a yard arent that great, but cut them as long as you can to try for a vaneer log. Then cut them farther up until the log is around 14 inches in diameter on the small end. If the logs are cut and laid out I'd get at least 2 bids on them. You should be looking at 8 logs off those 4 trees. If your local saw mill is trustworthy then just deliver them have have their buyer grade them (to make it easy).

You wont know until the trees are cut what the quality is. But, around here it isnt crazy to get several thousand per tree.

a guy who owned a cabinet shop told me that someone would come get his sawdust for their stables. Said if there was a spoonfull of black walnut dust in the hopper it would kill his horses. Always wondered if that was true or just something that people always said.

If it wasn’t more than 2 hours away…
I’m not sure how to price the log. I see rough cut and partially dried lumber priced from $3-$5 bd ft, of course there are always outliers.Milling costs .50 to $1 bd ft. There will be some waste and shrinkage.

Around where I live now the last prices I saw were red oak . 60, white oak was $1.60, and Walnut was approaching $3 per board foot. That is sawlog prices. I'm not sure on vaneer.

Brent M at Keller Lumber in Stevenson , buyer of high grade Walnut and White Oak. They don't like yard trees though. They tend to have nails and such in them.

Theres big money in it if you can find the market. $4/bf+. You might have to haul them quite a ways though

They don't have metal detectors for this?

Yep, but it's more than messing the saw up. Nails and such ruin the grade of lumber . Some veneer mills actually "MRI" them and have capability to determine the best cuts before it even hits the slicer .

These are from old home places I’m sure. But when I say old, I mean from the late 1800s to early 1900s. I have about another dozen down on the creek, that’s pretty good size as well. Old sharecroppers houses was their way back. Man farmed it when he was a kid and he’s 87 now. Said there wasn’t any houses in there when he was a kid. So these will be under the assumption of old home place trees I guess. And like I said I’m not looking to get rich, I didn’t know if there was someone may pay a little money for em, and could use them mainly. I’m getting ready to build a house where they was standing, and gonna keep one tree for my mantle, and make A little lumber for the island in the kitchen, But I don’t need anymore of it per say and would like to see it used somewhere.

Evidently it does. "Toxicity. Black walnut shavings are a toxic bedding for horses. The innermost wood of the black walnut causes toxicity after oral or skin contact. Bedding containing as little as 20 percent fresh black walnut shavings made from old or new wood can cause toxicity."
