I am supposed to be replanting a clear cut this year and am not getting a warm fuzzy feeling about what is happening with it. It did not get sprayed until November after everything had died and the guy blew some bs up my arse about the residual taking care of things. Well I have green stuff growing out there, hardwood stump sprouts, Yaupon and bay and magnolia and even volunteer Pines out there alive. In a properly sprayed c cut should there be anything alive 2-3 months after spray? Now it’s freaking March, he is blowing more bs up my arse about the wind has not been right to burn , of course he has had great winds over the course of the last 3 months he had to get it done and the planting window is pretty much over. For you guys who know what is the latest you would personally plant? How responsive is the Forestry Commission to consumers getting jacked around by a licensed Forester? I spent my career in a profession regulated by the State and any referral, valid or not, was a nightmare. And I am about ready to get this guys attention.

I would wait and plant this coming winter. Spray again late summer, burn in December and plant in January. I think you are in my general area and I have a forester that my family has used for 40 years that does a decent job. Can drop you his name and contact info if you need it. I am in Barbour County. Are you planting Loblolly or Long Leaf?

I’ve never heard of spraying that late (Too late). It’s way too late to plant, the roots need time to grow before the trees bud imo.

November is too late for site prep spray. That’s pitiful forestry practice. I would NOT plant in a stand without proper site prep. Looks like you need to spray again in summer 2024 and plant next winter. This is your answer! AND: Get a different Forester!

It’s too late to spray, once things start shutting down for the winter, regardless of month. I would have a hard time recommending planting into what you described.
Bottom line: it’s your money, it’s your decision, if it doesn’t feel right, walk away.

Also if he used a reputable herbicide contractor they should stand behind the job and re spray for free if it was a failure.
You can successfully plant in March but it isn’t ideal

Around here nov is too late to spray . Too late to plant now . Best practice is to wait a year after cut and let all volunteer trees come up then spray that fall with right kind of herbicide and plant the next feb. This come from company that plants over 4,000 acres a year . Sometimes every site has a different type of herbicide according to what’s growing a what was cut . For instance replanting hardwood cut is different than pine plantation cut for herbicide application.

We shall see how it goes. He managed to get most of it burned so I am gonna go ahead and replant. Not thrilled about the herbicide application. Before burn there was green out there. Some pine seedlings, bay, grass and the Yaupon it did not touch. I am gonna have hand spray that crap with whatever kills it. Those 3 species are extremely difficult to kill with chemicals. There isn’t any chemical manufacturer that will guarantee pine or youpon kill. Fire will certainly kill your pine. Youpon is going to be top killed and but will eventually come back. You are just trying to give your pine seedlings a fighting chance at survival. Hopefully, they put 4 ounces of oust xtra in the batch so you would get some carryover weed control this spring.
