Scouting is a form of hunting?? ? Sure didn’t know making one gobble with a hen yelp was not allowed. i don’t pretend to know the mindset of ALDCNR, but silent scouting is observation & turkey calling while scouting is hunting ... looks like they’re ok with locator calls 🤷🏻♂️ personally i’ve never called at all pre-season, turkey or locators

I knew you use to have to sign the map but now with the app I didn’t think you even had to have a map. Am I wrong? The signed WMA map is no longer your permit. Either check in/out online, or using one of the kiosks with Check in/out slips is now your daily WMA permit.

I almost form a federal ticket in Arkansas many years ago on the Cache for not signing across the face of my federal duck stamp.
I got checked on a WMA one year. I had my state hunting license, WMA license, and the map which was the permit. GW checked it all and then said in a very condescending tone, I can give you ticket because you didn't sign your map. I politely asked if he had a pen, which he did, and I signed it. That's the only time I've had a negative experience with a GW. Was told by one last week if you have the app you don’t need the map

I think scouting before season should be banned as well. Do what? Got to be sarcasm I would think.

No, no sarcasm. That is my opinion. Why scout, turkeys are going to be where the were last year and year before that and the year before that. If I got 2000 acres to hunt this year and have never been on it. I would never go on it before the season and listen early. I would wait until late morning, probably after lunch and learn the roads and that would be it. That’s what I like, the unknown. Just my opinion guys! In my experience sometimes turkeys will not be where they were last year. I start scouting for turkeys in January. Scout every weekend. Scout new places every year as well. Come season, I scout or hunt everyday. And by scouting, I do not mean counting gobbles. I want to know where he roosts, how many roost areas he will use, which direction he flies down, where his hens are, how many hens, where they go, where he spends his days, what he does in different weather conditions, different periods of the season, etc. I hunt skyline and with 60,000 acres, if you don’t scout, you won’t kill many birds. Maybe I’m not a good enough hunter to be able to kill one on a whim. I believe gathering as much intel as possible helps me kill my limit and it also helps me kill turkeys on days where others cannot kill a turkey.

I love to walk in the woods this time of year. It's really the only time of year that you can move around and not worry about messing someone s hunting up and it's not a hundred degrees. Looking for post season deer sign and hopefully some fresh turkey sign. And no, I don't think you should ever call and educate turkeys any more than they already are
You haven't been blocked until you've been flock blocked!!!

That's the only time I've had a negative experience with a GW. How’s that negative? He gave you an opportunity to get within compliance without writing you a ticket. I think that’s pretty nice of him. 😉 I guess the non-ticket aspect was nice of him, lol. The whole attitude he took about it was unprofessional IMO. But I was thankful I didn't get a ticket!

You sir appear to be lucky and have a consistent grounds to hunt, congratulations! But, if you hunt everchanging public lands or timber lands and If you don’t know the property well it makes it hard to make the right moves if you don’t know the lay of the land. Creek crossings terraces, subtle land features unnoticed on topomaps, trees across roads or washed out roads. Some places I have hunted the woods might have been clear cut and are just gone since you were there last. Scouting is absolutely necessary for many of us, also it is a great time to kill squirrels and get recon on deer for next season

I was walking/driving around glassing fields and clearcuts for birds. Also walked a few places I wasn't able to get to this past deer season looking for deer and turkey sign. I'm also very new to turkey hunting. I'm not sure what scouting right now is going to hurt? As some one else said, this is the best time of year to get out and learn new property with out messing some one up and with out it being too hot. I'll make a deal with you though. You tell me where you saw birds at last year on public land and I wont scout for turkeys again!

We had some guys used to call to birds at a place I used to hunt. They did so on purpose and with malice we felt. Maybe it was just to hear em sound off.
I almost form a federal ticket in Arkansas many years ago on the Cache for not signing across the face of my federal duck stamp.
What saved me was some guys still in the woods after noon, hit their duck call. The two federal GWs handed me back my license and took off. They said they were hunting after noon, didn’t have to shoot simply calling was hunting.
Didn’t bother me and I sign my stamp across the face now. I have never understood, what is the point of signing the stamp?

When we had a ton of birds I didn’t fool with listening. Now they have became so sparse on Skyline I listen at usual spots and try to add a couple of new ones before it opens. I didn’t kill a bird in two of my best spots last year and preseason listening saved the season.Never call other than an owl hoot if none are cutting up.
