Oh my God... Where to start?

They are one of the most popular rifles in the world. If you are a firearms enthusiast, and you don't know about the Mosin's then you must have been under a rock for a long time.

They are still used by at least one organized group of armed forces if I'm not mistaken. They are used in extremely cold climates due to their reliability in extreme temperatures.

They were fielded by the Russians and the Finns in WWII and the Russo-Finnish war. The Russians in the Russo-Japanese war. The Russians in the Russian Civil war and the Russians in WWI.

Extremely reliable operation. About like a 30-06 in ballistics. Great sniper rifles. There were also two variants (that I know of) that were carbines the M38 and M44.

If you can get your hands on a Finnish Mosin, you will really have something. Probably the nest of the best would be a Finnish sniper version.

I have a M38 that I have refinished and turned (reversible back to original) into a Scout Rifle.

Roadkill will be along in a moment to educate you further.

The top of the receiver hex or round on yours?

is the rifle long or short?

I have seen pictures of Russian troops in Ukraine actually still using them in battle. (Poor bastards)

If I’d have had any sense I’d have bought the whole barrel back in the mid 90’s when they were $49.99. I still have 4 crates of light ball 7.62x54R but that’s to feed my PSL-54

Back in 01, one of the local gun shops in Mobile (now shut down) had several barrels packed full of MNs for $50 each. I looked at them at thought "who in their right mind would buy these pieces of crap"...wish now that I would have bought a few of them

That was Larry’s Guns IIRC, on Pleasant Valley rd. That’s exactly what I’m talking about. Old whiskey barrels with m-91s and M,44 carbines for stupid cheap. They were Passovers then but boy were we wrong.

This pretty well sums it up. The Russian MN 1891 and the German GW 98 are probably the most prolific rifles in modern history. The Germans sold the 98 system rifle, the Russians forced theirs on occupied territories. Any Russian satellite country was at one time armed with a Model 1891 variation. The Chinese, North Koreans, and North Vietnam used them too. They are simple, extremely rugged, not particularly accurate, and will shoot no matter what the conditions. Even US soldiers were armed with them (Polar Bear/Archangel Expedition). The general variations are M1891, M38 and Model 1944. The key to an accurate M91 is determining the bullet diameter to fit the bore. They vary from .310-.312 and like a heavy bullet. I have a Finnish Tika sniper rifle that is scary accurate with a 180g .312 bullet. The Finns used Russian receivers and built their own models. Congrats on your rifles.

Yep, there was a place in Boaz (Collectables) that was selling them crazy cheap. I was thinking something like 59.00 though. Also had SKSs for 79 ro 99 depending on which one you wanted. I wish I had bought every one they had now. frown

Yeah I like the Finnish versions myself. That's a Finnish M-39 and a much rarer M-28 under it. As you can see from that M-39 the wood on the Finnish Mosins can be incredible. The harsh winters cause a burl in the grain of the wood. Pictures don't do it justice.
