Looks like this might be the last year for wife's bakery/restaurant. Sure, there is the age thing for her but she loves doing it. The main reason is inflation. She cannot charge enough to cover the expense of doing business and expect people to pay it. Her costs have almost doubled in the last two years. Power, utilities, insurance, basics like flour, butter, milk, sugar, eggs - all the basic essential ingredients have increased twofold if not more. She would have to almost triple the cost of everything going out the door to stay viable. People won't/can't pay that for a non essential product. Think about that next time someone tells you how great the economy is under democrats.

Inflation is 3%. That’s why the stock market went up 30% last year. Just a small 3% inflation rate is all we have…. slap

Inflation is how they consolidate power. Its built into the design. Small businesses have a hard time competing against big corporations as it is, inflation is the war of attrition against independents who have figured out how to stay in the game against the giants.

I spent about a hour Friday walking around Walmart looking at primarily groceries. Yea 3% my ass. Had to buy a small container of the cheap lighter fluid it was 5.00. Walked out out of there with 100.00 spent. And half of that was Walmart brand stuff. did not hardly have chit when I walked out of there. Sorry to hear about your wife’s business. This govt is giving us a royal screwing 😬😬. Guess we having to pay Ukraine pensions and giving all ILLEGALS free debit cards. Just going to get worse.

I think it affects us all so incrementally that we just angrily cope until something like this hits our family. I sure hate to hear that roadkill. I would hope (and bet) her customers would end up adapting and valuing what she does. Pulling for things to go her way so she can continue as long as she wants to.

Can she convert the bakery portion into a cottage business and work out of your home? Or maybe she can adjust her marketing to lure the ones who can afford the increased cost in products.

Know a guy whose wife does this.

Craft style business can charge a premium and since overhead is already covered so to speak it’s a sweet deal. She does porch pickup

Also good way to write off a nice kitchen upgrade with convection ovens etc…. A sub-zero refrigerator to keep stuff fresher for longer etc……

But as you meant. Cost are killing small businesses. Lean and mean is on who new level these days.
Like skinny said. Large corps can absorb those cost much easier than mom and pop

It’s all by design. Chaos creates change. Killing small businesses kills morale

I read somewhere that it cost the average family 12-15k more just to live the last four years. I find that to be pretty accurate inflation rate.

Exeter's Pyramid is a basic money concept a lot of people should learn to get an idea of scale and how safe the money system is. Basically, gold, silver, and actual printed paper money are the safest, and stocks, derivatives, and debt instruments are less safe.

Especially if you are having to eat lawn care chemicals.

My daughter recently graduated from au with a culinary science degree, she has a job at a local restaurant helping with their catering side. She has a cottage business and does really well. While she does cakes, she focuses on specialty things like macarons, cupcakes, etc which doesn’t cost her as much to make but are generally higher cost items.
