Anyone else ever wanted to hike the appalachian trail? I get the itch every spring, it's one of those things that I've always thought I would ove to do. My wife has some health issues so we always keep it to a day hikes whem we are in the mountains. Maybe one day I'll just make my mind up and just do it.

I have always wanted to. I simply do not have the time to do it since I am not wealthy and have to hold a job and work for a living. When I retire and if I am still in great shape, I will have the time to do it then. I have only hike the AT trail through portions of it in the Great Smoky Mountains NP.

I'm sure you have done some homework. Lyme bearing Ticks are bad. Then you can throw in a low occurrence rate of attacks from Bears and psychotic humans. How many miles do you think you two could comfortably walk in a day ? Just curious. I never was good at homework If a bear kills me, it was just my time to go. I was as sick I've ever been from a tick bite, I didn't think of that. I'm in good shape. I regularly run and ruck wirh a 40 lb vest several times a week. I think I could do 20 miles a day. I did 18 miles in 7 hours without a pack while trail running a couple months ago. It was around 3500 feet of eleavation gain. My worry is getting injured, I tend to over do it, I love to push myself.

I thought about it and then realized how comfortable my king sized memory foam mattress is.
It would be cool to have a trail name though.

A couple of CG Rescue Swimmers from Air Station I was at had to subdue a crazy man on the trail around 2013. He was hyped up on drugs came into a community camp ground and was robbing campers at gun point. One of the CG swimmers knocked him out with a punch to the jaw when he had his guard down. Zip tied him and held him until LE came and got him. Bally's move on his part. Back story on the guy, he was a preacher got hit by lighting and was never the same, got hooked on drugs and ended up doing this. Crazy. I goggled story, it would not come up. I would be packing if I hiked that trail. People come up missing in the Appalachian Mountains every year. Some conspiracy theorists believe that there are wild feral people that live in those mountains and they are responsible for the disappearances.

You should check out the book Blind Courage. Easy read. It is about Bill Irwin (from B'ham). He was the first blind person to ever thru-hike the AT. Really good book and I would highly recommend it.
Several years back I had a co-worker's son thru hike it. He is in excellent shape and did it one summer in preparation of joining the military. He is now a Combat Controller in the Air Force. He ain't no slouch.

I always wanted to thru hike. Never did. Probably not in the cards now trying to take off 6 months with my business. Maybe when retired but doubt body will cooperate by then...heck my hip and knee now would be a serious challenge.

I've section hiked but put it on hold with young kids. A couple of my longer mileage sections were the smokies end-to-end and the 100-mile wilderness with a summit of Katadin at the end. All in was more like 125 miles in 4.5 days. Smokies was like walking through a green tunnel the whole way.
