Correct CoC is Church of Christ. I grew up in and was fire and brimstone. I always recalled one sermon about casting stones. Too bad some didn’t realize what it was about. I’ll digress now.

I always thought fire and brimstone as the preacher shouting , working up a sweat and such. You went to a CoC church that did this? I've been to them on and off all my life and I've never heard what I'd call a fire and brimstone sermon. Best I ever heard is a black preacher , named Melvin Otey . He's a former federal prosecutor and law professor . No fire and brimstone here, whole lota truth though.

I don’t think anyone was casting stones at the CoC. Nothing was said that disparages that denomination. I have an aunt that married a CoC man. He was a godly man, my aunt joined and never looked back. They lived happily until his death. We always had deep discussions on what they believe. While I dont agree with their beliefs, Ive never said they were wrong. I think in the end, we will all find out our beliefs and what man has interpolated of the word has jumped track of what the lord intended.

Maybe so but I grew in fear of going to hell just simply from associating with other denominations. Everyone was going to hell but us. Prayed only for our denomination and others if they would change their evil ways. We couldn’t associate with Baptist or others.

Then the preacher ran off with the church secretary

It got a little more lax but I questioned their motives especially after a black family visited and no one met or talked with them.

A good friend, his dad was a CoC preacher in jasper. Died from the war later in life from cancer due to exposure to chemicals. Jim’s family was kicked out of the preachers house and not much was done to help them. His mom went back to school and raised the kids. Jim never forgave the church for not helping more than they did.

I’m not knocking CoC too bad but I have issues with those claiming to be more holy than others. I may go to hell for that but the Bible I read says judge not least the be judged and the folks I knew doing the judging lacked some morals.

The best Christians I’ve known never said they were unless asked, they lived the life being meek and humble. Going out of their way for others.
The list goes on and on.

I kinda prefer nondenominational Churches these days.

I married a Catholic
My oldest sister quit church because of our upbringing
My brother is Methodist or Lutheran
My other sister is CoC but nothing like we grew up in as she says.

We will all be judge , whether we judge others or not.

Find it funny that folks wanna judge other folks for interpretation of scriptures. I could be wrong but there is only one way and that is to repent and confess Jesus Christ is your lord and savior that we should try and live as best we can in his light

I totally understand…I admire you for where you are spiritually, I honestly do. I had a similar situation in a Southern Baptist church. (See below) It honestly ran me away from church. I love the lord with all my heart but “church religion and denomination ” will work on your mind. I still struggle with organized church, Ive prayed for a long time for the lord to show me the way.


We had a deacon that faltered (Nothing illegal, No need in details) He lost his job, his wife and kids left him, his mother and father disowned him. This man was at the lowest of low in his life, At that time I was a deacon as well and I called him and told him I wasnt calling for explanations, or details, I was only calling him to tell him I was thinking of him, praying for him and I loved him in Christ. He told me he appreciated it so much that I called. I had been the only the only deacon or member of that church that had checked on him. In fact, the chairman of the deacons told him it was probably best he not return to that church under the circumstances. This rocked my spiritual world, WHO HAS THE RIGHT TO TELL SOMEONE ELSE THEY ARE NOT WELCOME IN GODS HOUSE??

We had a couple of Hell fire and brimstone preachers (Baptist) and we had a few that were just loud and sweaty, but preached Love. Fire and brimstone was wasn’t about loud and slathered up. It was about being guilted with the eternal damnation from sinning and Hell’s wrath associated vs a message of Love through God’s salvation. That’s just how I interpreted fire and brimstone, from a Baptist perspective, and may be different in other denominations.

My Daddy called the fire and brimstone folks Hardshell Baptist. I had a cousin that preached like that.

Church of Christ is not a denomination. The sinners prayer or anything resembling it is not the New Testament. Baptism is for the remission of sins and puts you in Christ. Baptism isn’t a work.

And yet, pouring is one of the oldest recorded methods of baptism. In fact, most religious scholars think that when JtB baptized Jesus, it was most likely through pouring, not complete literal immersion.
