2 parts red trace mineral 1 part dical phosphate Take a steel bow rake, clear out a 3x3 spot, pour trace and dical out, use rake to work it into the soil. They'll dig a hole. Freshen up twice a year.

If I may, why are you wanting to do a mineral site ? To attract deer to that area so you can possibly kill them or do you believe it will make a difference in the horns ? I'm just curious.

It’s a cheap and easy place to inventory the deer all antler growing season. Replenish the lick once annually and you have a place to get a pic of all the bucks in the area without having to continually put bait out.

Plus the minerals can’t hurt.

Don’t be discouraged if they don’t tear up a particular mineral lick location. It’s most likely the soil type not the mineral mix. I’ve got places where they won’t touch a lick but 300 yards away they’ve literally eaten more than a ton of soil over the past 5 years. Seems like the more clay the better that like it. Loamy soil, not so much.

I’ve got established licks with holes so deep they hold over a foot of water and the deer will stick their heads under the water to eat the mineral/dirt.

I also add 1 part stock salt to the mix. They tear it up! Does it help, I don't know but they love the stuff. It is a great place to get buck pictures in velvet. For some reason they tend to leave it alone when the velvet comes off.

Red trace mineral is 90-95 % salt . No extra salt is needed.

This works try it. Get a basketball net or equivalent…. Tie the bottom of said net…..stainless steel basket, metal will rust and break. Nylon feed sack use what you can. A plastic milk crate will work. Put a cattle salt block in it. Hang it over your salt lick. Log across the hole or from a limb above it. Most established holes are dug out. It will last a longer than throwing it in the hole or pouring salt in the already established spot. Most hold water after time……. Deer will lick the hanging block and eat the soil like they always do. Calcium phosphate added to it is said to help antler growth???? Letting them age will help also.

Bingo. With three well established licks, At some point during the year of I get a pic or some pics of almost every buck we kill across our 1750 ac place we hunt.

If you are trying to both attract and give deer nourishment why use just salt? That will attract but do very little to help deer.
Again, use 30-06 from Whitetail Inst. or Sportsman Choice minerals.
