There seems to be a certain destructive element missing in those subways and that allows them to have nice things.
Police...... I noticed no police in the video. That must be it.

I wish I could find the article but can't.........but read one not too long ago talking about how architecture, particularly in public buildings/civil engineering and design/etc has become very minimalist, simple and generally lacks character. They showed dozens of examples of thinks like park benches, lamp posts, buildings (obviously), and other things and how over the last 40-50 years, the designs have been stripped of really any character or ornate detail and have become very plain and sterile. A lot of it has to do more with cost than anything. The article's main point was that somewhere along the way, we, as a society, decided that beauty and character in normal everyday things just wasn't worth the cost anymore. A good example, though less applicable today since public phones don't really exist anymore, is the classic red telephone booths in London compared to more modern designs from the 90's

It's easy to build ornate and beautiful things when you don't have a populace with the right to criticize government spending. Or a populace that you can get to clean and maintain it! Lots of folks here don't want fall into two categories: those who do not want to do that work and those who do not want to pay to have that work done. We can't even get people to clean up after themselves in lots of cases as they seem to think that is someone else's job to do.
