Was looking at some available property (120 acres)... It has a dog club next to it (also adjacent to national forest).

I've no experience with dog clubs, so I don't know how that might affect hunting (deer & turkey) on the 120 acre tract or surrounding NF.

Anyone have experience with a neighboring dog club or otherwise have any helpful input?

I wouldn't think it would affect turkey hunting necessarily because a lot of times the where the turkeys are during deer season vs turkey season can vary and could possibly push them your way with all the pressure. As far as deer hunting goes from my experience most dog clubs run sat/sun and still hunt during the week. It would most definitely be an annoyance to me with the dogs and human pressure especially since the dogs don't know property lines. On the other hand it will probably push deer onto you during the drives as well. As far as the NF goes, we hunted next to it growing up and it always seemed that the people hunting it always thought the private land was loaded with deer and hunted on our line even though they had thousands of acres to hunt mostly untouched. We strategically didn't have any major food sources near the line that would cause high deer traffic in that area. All depends on the layout of the land you never know what your going to get with neighbors public or private, but i would most likely avoid this situation.

Not to mention the dogs running on your property intentional or not.

The first place we had by Georgiana was surrounded by big dog clubs. This was a detail left out in the description of the property. The first year we worked every possible day off to get the property ready for opening weekend. Fast forward to opening weekend. We get in the stands with the kids and about an hour in we hear dogs barking. A little while later here comes a big pack of dogs running through our place chasing deer. We’re all like what the he’ll was that? The same thing happened every Friday-Sunday until January. But it didn’t take us long to figure out what was happening. We had a County road that split our property and the club to the north of us would drop the dogs to run through our property and would stand the north line. Some strategically place big bowls of food scraps fixed that problem. They’d drop the dogs and the dogs would run straight to the food. They got mad at me and told us to please stop putting food out for the dogs. I told them I put it out for the neighbors old barn dog. It wasn’t my fault their dogs came on our property and ate the food. Everytime the dogs would come eat, we’d catch them and go tie them to our gate next to the county road and call them to come get their dogs. They eventually stopped turning them lose anywhere close to our property.

I appreciate the input... that's what I figured, but wanted to hear from folks that had dealt with it. Thank y'all!

No deal for me. Been there, done that. We weren't as smart as Marsh. He handled it well. We were on a vendor paid hunt years ago at the old Rock Fence Station. I watched a pair of good'uns jump out of their truck and cut their dogs loose to run across the property we were hunting. The guys at Rock Fence had given up on fighting them. We were told "If it doesn't have a collar, its a coyote." The dog ain't what needed shooting.

The dogs don't know where the property lines are and their owners don't care where the lines are.

Back in the 70's I hunted a 100acre farm that had big timber owners all around it. On Saturdays dogs would be let out somewhere to the east and would push to the standers on a road about 1/2 mile away. The 100acres was a rectangle in the middle and the dogs almost always pushed deer across. I killed a pile of deer from in front of those dogs, never saw another hunter. I still hunt there, no dog hunting allowed in the area now.

Actually the ethical dog hunters have the means now to stop their dogs before crossing lines and know exactly where they are at all times. The joys of modern tech.

Yeah, they are getting better but there is still a whole lot or renegades that could care less about property rights.

The one big club we had most of the issues did also. Always had an excuse why they didn’t stop. They seemed to work perfect at the end of the hunt when it was time to catch the dogs to go somewhere else. It’s funny they’d all stop on the county road just past our property. Hmmmm!!!
