I'd say plastic is fine , if installed correctly . But when they're so tight you must use a long, 1/2" pull handle and break the "ears" off , that's a problem. I like the looks of Toyota's metal replacement. Seems kinda odd the manufacturer offers it's own metal upgrade and it's cheaper than the plastic version.

I'm a fan of the front skid plate, keeps sticks and such out of the pullies and belt. Tacoma has 4 bolts and takes less than 2 minutes to drop with a 3/8 air ratchet. Oil filter housing isn't a problem now for me either now that I have a good tool and installed it myself.

Where is it located on the engine?

I'm a fan of the filter location on the 4.0 V6 . Toyota had a great thing going there.

There is a aftermarket metal cartridge filter holder
I do not like the cartridge nor do I like the position of it
The old 4.0 had the filter on top of the engine and it was very easy to replace
The new 4.0 requires the skid pan to be removed before it can be changed

I believe the current V6 is a 3.5.

The 4Runner still has the 4.0 or at least my ‘21 does
The Tacoma has the 3.5
Thanks for that info

After removing skid plate, it is on the lower driver's side. You reach up between the front cross member and the sway bar. It has a convenient "funnel" built under it, so you can put a tube on it to catch spill-oil once you unscrew the filter.

Right, Runners are still 4.0. Trying too figure out why Toyota does what they do will hurt yer head.

Not a taco. My genesis has a cartridge filter and you have to take the skid plate/noise damping off half way down the car. No trap door (gonna make one) and add this

TIL (Today, I learned...)

There is such a thing as a "cartridge filter". Never heard of such. Every vehicle I've ever owned or even helped other folks change the oil in was a spin-on filter....and that includes a Toyota ('88 4x4 pickup, to be specific)

It's not just Toyota. My wife's Buick Envision and daughters Buick Encore also have the cartridge filter. I had no idea until I went to change the oil, couldn't believe what I was seeing.

My skid plate has a separate door on it to assist with oil changes. It keeps you from having to take the whole skid plate off. Most aftermarket skid plates have these, as well.

0w20 is like water, can only imagine how fluid the 0w8 is. I see some have moved up to 0w30 or 5w30 for some residual lubrication on the cylinder walls for start-up. I'm considering it, since we're in the heat most of the year, here. I'm also changing oil at 5k and not the 10k recommended interval.
