It is that they are fun to shoot and if they run off after shooting you don't have to feel obligated to go find them and drag them out of the woods like a deer. With hogs their brethren will have every hair and bone eaten in a matter of a day or two.

I rid the world of two of them this afternoon and was proud to do it because I still hate them with a passion.

People claim they are good to eat. Idk, I wouldn’t bother with them unless I was starving.

Ive gotten some good sausage from them but other than that for me its a pleasure to eliminate them and leave them for the buzzards

My wife has a cousin that was a big pig hunter with dogs and he smoked a piglet for Easter one year and I wasn't impressed. Probably because the thing had been running from dogs and built up lactic acid in the meat but I thought it had a strong gamey taste. I suppose I need to try again to be fair. I think I'll start with a medium sized one, because I have no desire to fool with a big old nasty boar, and cut the backstraps out and try them. If they are good then maybe move up to hindquarters next or take it to Nichol's Processing and let them work their magic. They must do a good job because I took one there to donate last year and some guy was claiming it before I even got my tailgate down

Here lately for us, the buzzards don't even get a chance before the other hogs have cleaned them up.

The Boston butt is pretty good off the wild hogs. It’s not as fatty as a farm pig but has enough fat to retain moisture while smoking.

I thought everything else was similar to a farm pig except the ribs, those were horrible.

if its male and really smells bad dont eat it . other than that ever one i ate off of was great .

one thing about wild hogs the meat is most times leaner than farm raised . people tend to over cook it

A wild hog will eat anything, and I mean anything. Dont bleed out in a hog pen or you will never be seen again. I watched some feeder pigs I had years ago catch a chicken snake that was at least 5' long. They tore the poor snake to pieces and he was gone before I could even get close to try and save the snake. The snake was a regular in the corn crib and he did a good job on mice. We had a catfish pond "turn-over" once and did not see the fish until we had a large fish kill. We took a john boat and just scooped the dead fish up and took them to the pigs. All the fish were gone in a matter of a few minutes each time we unloaded the dead fish.

We were working on a fence around a hog pen once and left the crib door open where we had some hams curing. It only took about 5 minutes and they were trying to get the hams to eat. We saw what was about to happen and got them out before they got to another ham. The crib had 2 steps before reaching the crib's floor and the pigs walked up the steps like a dog. They are some of the smartest animals around and have a nose that is able to smell anything anytime.

I’m no pit master, but ribs off of a 80lb sow I killed were delicious.
I cooked a small one whole last year and if you didn’t like it, you just didn’t like meat.
It was just fall apart good barbq.
You know how some people don’t like deer meat? Same thing. The wild pork I’ve cooked has been terrific . Mine are corn fed all season (no kidding) I’m sure that makes a dif vs one killed in Bankhead.

The ones I've killed out there were great

If they weren't sooooooo destructive.....I might have a little more respect for them!!

The ones I have trapped have been really good to eat.


I have done the hams and the tenderloins.
Soaked the tenderloin cut up in Italian dressing, and grilled,
The hams were grilled and pulled apart for sandwiches

I hunted with Hogwild 10 plus years ago and killed 2 that the dogs had bayed up. 125ish lb sows. Knifed em both they died within 30 seconds. Knocked the guys out em and hauled 5 hours north to my house. Skinned em out and cooked em that summer. They was fine groceries! Only ones I ever killed in Alabama. Killed a pile of em in Arkansas, off row crops and they was fine eating too.

Everyone who’s eaten one I’ve cooked liked them.

I’ve cleaned 2 and both were so full of worms I threw them away

I've found a good network of financially challenged people who are willing to take any hog I shot, not bragging but I shot a bunch, most of them will come pick them up if not I will deliver. Last night I really got humbled, I shot a 125# sow and called a wonderful man that I hadn't given one to in a while he was very happy to take this one and I told him I would meet him at our usual place, he told me he may be a little late getting there but would definitely be there, well I got to our place and had to wait a good bit of time so I called him to be sure everything was okay about the time the phone connected he rides up on a bicycle apologizing for being late. Needless to say we loaded up the bike and hog and took him home. Moral of story....find the right group of folks and help them, hogs laying in the woods feed no one. Before it starts I am not slamming anyone just saying there may be someone that would appreciate the food
