I usually take this present week off each year to hunt but I ended up taking off a week early because Mrs. Bamaeyedoc got the Portland Landing SOA hunt last week. Unfortunately, we had to withdraw due to her neck and arm issues. Anyway, I was able to get out a good bit even though it was frigid, I was able to be blessed with a real good deer on the afternoon of January 17th.

This stand is on a power line and I can see for over a half mile. I have about a hundred yards in front of me before the terrain drops very steeply. The property line is just below my line of sight and I have a very small plot (30y X 40y) planted around 2 huge metal power poles and 4 guy wires (yeah, my tractor guy hates me!😂). The plot didn’t come up worth a darn so basically the deer walk across it, may nibble on what little green there is and move on. The guy across the line has a spin feeder in his plot and I watch deer all the time in his field about 300 yards away. That afternoon I had seen several does and a couple of small rack bucks across the line. I was watching a decent 8 feeding over there when all the sudden he gets ancy. The next thing I know, he’s being run off the plot by a piglet. I mean this little pig still with stripes runs that buck slam off the field! Soon, I see the momma and 8 piglets all on that guys plot. She’s a black and white spotted sow and I will kill her if I get the chance. They proceed to chase every deer out off the plot and then get to vacuuming up all the corn he had out. Lesson: pigs don’t like deer and they will run them off!

So anyway I’m watching those pigs across the way when a nice sized doe pops over the hill and walks across the plot and straight down the road toward me. I get my phone out to just film her because Janet and the grandkids like to see all the critters I see when I'm hunting. So she walks on by me and a few minutes later another smaller doe comes out from where the first one did and follows the same path. So I get the phone back out and I filming her when I look up and holy crap, there’s a buck!! He pops out at the same spot the does did. After only 8 seconds of doe footage, I quickly put the phone down and get my gun up!! It’s a pretty funny video actually as I dang near dropped it trying to be quiet and all!

He’s just casually walking, following the road heading straight at me. I’m watching him and realize he’s a really good deer. I try to be pretty selective on what I shoot down there and this deer met my standards so I decide to take the first good shot he gave me. Then, he suddenly stops and turns perfectly broadside at 50 yards. Putting the crosshairs behind the left shoulder, I squeezed the trigger and he drops in his tracks right in the middle of the road!! No need for CNC on this one!! Man, I was pumped!!

I sat there for a few minutes to gather myself then climbed out of the shooting house and made my way down to him. Dang near hyperventilating on the way and of course, the adrenalin dump starts and I go to coughing and dry heaving! Good lord this stuff gets to me!! I thought he was a straight 8 point and for the contest that’s what we’ll call him. However, when I got to him saw that he had a little sticker point on his right G2 so I’m calling him a 9pt otherwise! He weighed 185lbs, 14.5 inside spread, and bases were 5” right and 4.75” left. I got Skullworks doing a mount for me.

I was really proud of this deer! Never had him on camera until the ones I took that day. So without further delay here are some pics!

The Model 70 Featherweight .270 did the job! Those Winchester Deer Season XP 130gr are bad news on deer. Pretty much everything anterior to the diaphragm was liquified.

No problem tracking him. However, gutting and loading him on the atv wasn’t as easy! 🥵
