I was killing some time at work last night on google maps and ran across the Anniston Army Depot. What are the thousands of little clearings with what looks like pyramids on the north/west side of the depot? And my lord at the military vehicles they have there.

Bunkers. They used to store lots of chemical munitions there and spent about 20 years getting rid of it all. They also made hellfire missiles there and a few other munitions at one time.

Interesting. That's a hell of a lot of bunkers. Thanks for the reply.

I believe they clean/refit vehicles coming from combat areas there.

A lot of folks might be surprised at what has been stored at that depot. I bet some strange stuff is being stored there now.
I know a lot of UXO can be found along both sides of the fence with the Pelham range, but I think a lot of that is just from our National Guard having New Years and July 4th celebrations. They just shoot the artillery straight-up while they are partying.

The depot does a lot of retrofit/ rebuild of vehicles ( tanks, strykers, launchers etc) . They also do weaponry rebuild/repair as well. a large percentage of DOD contracting companies have a facility on the depot, or near by. Very large operation.

What's a UXO? I can tell y'all this much... Our place in Alexandria isn't far from Pelham Range. They blow stuff up there multiple days a week.

I've spent a week there, two times, for Incident Command Management training. We had park somewhere and then bussed to the housing and accounted for at all times. This was when they were in the process of disposing of some bad stuff. I felt like I was in a minimum security prison. They did let us get out and walk or check out bikes in the evenings. I would walk through the old Officer's housing and bring back memories of my days growing up on Navy bases. Pretty nice houses that were mostly wasting away.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Captain Crunch is at Anniston Army Depot. They feed all the small arms into it that they want to demil. Interesting that the Depot is a Superfund site due to all the contaminated soil and water there.

I never knew about all that until we went to a wedding a few years ago that was at the old officers club at what used to be Ft. McClellan. I was Googling some of the buildings and was shocked to see about all the contamination at Ft. McClellan, along with all the PCB contamination from Monsanto in Anniston. If you want to read a horror story and go down a rabbit hole, go look all that up. I have a friend at church that was at Ft. McClellan and he has health issues from nerve agents he was exposed to while in the Army. I was talking to my pop about it and he mentioned that they used to camp at McClellan all the time while he was in the Guard. He said they hauled all their own water up there with them, to which I replied thank God!

When the Greek M1 Garands came back, I bought a couple of the empty shipping crates from CMP. They were just going to burn them. The rifles came back through the Army at Anniston before being transferred to the CMP for sale to civilians. The crate I kept had a list of the serial numbers of the rifles in it. There were a few Thompsons in the crate, in addition to the M1s. I am sure Captain Crunch ate those up, which is a damn shame.

My sister in law worked on the depot as an incinerator operator. She was afraid to talk much about it, even to family. As someone above mentioned, security was/is about like a minimum security prison.
