My little gas space heaters have really paid off the last two days. It’s 73 in my ranch house, out in the hallway anyway. Little cooler in bedrooms which is perfect.

We like it cold at night. Almost every cold morning, I get up and turn on the gas fireplace, ceiling fans, set the thermostat to circulate just before I leave. The girls wake up to a warm house shortly after.
For me, 56 is comfortable.

Our central unit has been set at 62 and it's been surprisingly comfortable and the unit hasn't been running much at all. I have a kerosene heater that I bring in and burn at its lowest setting just to keep the unit from constantly running. It was 73 when I carried back out to the garage and shut it off last night when we went to bed. Our place is small and pretty well insulated

My fireplace insert is is fire breathin beast…this dude will flat melt you..an he dont care how cold it is…its like 84 in here right now I wish mine was an insert or a free standing wood heater. We have a fireplace and most of the heat goes straight up. It helps enough to keep the living room warm and give the central system a break. My next house will have an insert with a fan or a free standing wood heater. One of the best pieces of advice I got from someone on here during our long cabin build thread was, "Don't over stove." So I shopped around a long time to find a stove that was designed for 900 s.f. Right now our cabin is two floors of 480 s.f. each with two lofts above the upper bedrooms totaling 144 s.f. for a total s.f. of a shade over 1,100 s.f. and even with such a small wood stove, that little stinker will still run you out of the place. We went to sleep last night and it was about 10 degrees outside and inside it was 70. Really too hot to sleep, but I knew it would cool off quick once the fire burned out.

I was doing fine until power went out @ 5am. It was surging so bad I about tore the thermostat off the wall trying to get my old heat pump from blowing up. I'm a little stressed about my gas tank being down to 5% like a dumbazz I didn't keep an eye on it as I only run gas logs off the tank. I turned them on this morning though, never let your emergency back up get gone.

How long will it burn if you fill it up and cut the damper way down?

How long will it burn if you fill it up and cut the damper way down? That's what I always did when We had a fireplace insert. I'd put a big ole Cherry, Persimmon or Hickory log in the heater (or any dense heavy long burning wood), cut the damper and wake up to a cool, not cold house. Building the fire back up was as easy as throwing a couple smaller logs in and open the damper. Within minutes the flame would be going good again.
