Science says that during cold temps deer burn more calories to stay warm. So at some point they have to get up and get food. This movement is usually after temps warm up a little and the wind dies down as others have already said. But if it’s below freezing all night and into the morning, one thing you can hang your hat on, they are hungry. They are going to be looking to replenish calories. That's what I was always told, they gotta eat to get calories and to stay warm.....I killed my two biggest deer when the temps were way below freezing, one in MS when it was 18 degrees and a heavy frost, the other in Missouri when it was 17 degrees, with snow flurries. The one from MS was killed right at day break and I heard him coming in crunching the leaves.....the one in Missouri was killed about 0830, but he was hot on a does trail.....

ievery time it snows, I go hunting thinking they will move. Never seen a deer with snow on the ground where I'm at in alabama. Only has snowed enough to cover ground her a couple times Killed my biggest buck in the snow in Crenshaw county AL in a food plot in the morning on 1/31/2014. Food plot had two hot does and covered in snow. It was inches of snow after big storm that year. Big wide 9 point and it was mid 20s so you never can tell. Other times it’s been cold with no snow and I have seen no deer. Never know what will happen but I know I won’t kill them if I’m not out there hunting.

If it’s cold and sunny, they’ll be sunning. If it’s cold and overcast they’ll be moving, imo. I’ll be hunting .

Nope!! Ain’t gonna happen. They don’t move at our place on mornings in the upper 20s. Now once it gets mid to late morning and the temp gets above freezing, you better be ready but never had any luck in real cold temps. We just make another big pot of coffee and hang out by the fireplace.

Depends on the duration of cold weather. A quick swing from 55 to 20 will often get them to hunker down a few hours, but if it drops to 20 and stays 20-30 for a few days they’ll move like crazy. I remember several years ago it came a terribly cold spell for several days (like single digits and teens for highs going on several days) and by the end of it they were moving real good. I’ve always seen great deer movement in temps from mid teens to low 30s. It’s not bothered them at all. It’s miserable for us though. Last year when we got that cold snap on 12/23 , on Monday 12/26 I had already lost count of how many I had seen when I shot a buck at 8:15. They were in every direction.

In my experience over the years, it seems I don't see many, if any, at daylight when everything is covered in frost...but once that sun comes up and the frost melts and starts dripping off the trees, THAT'S when I start seeing deer....that's generally what happens in my area and experience in extreme SE Alabama. BUT...I must admit that 2 of the bucks I have hanging on the wall were killed right at daybreak (VERY EARLY) on frosty mornings.
