Anyone hunt Redstone Arsenal Army post? l have general questions about hunting pressure and access points. Looking to discuss with someone that has or is currently hunting that property. I’ve wondered the same thing. Used to hunt up at Pelham range in Anniston and killed a lot of deer. Wondered why hunting the arsenal wasn’t a bigger thing up here.

Well first the general public can’t get access, you have to be active/retired or a reason to be on post. Then if you have access you have to take a class with outdoor rec and register your firearm with the garrison. You’re supposed to claim the weapon every time you go on post but rarely do people do it. Then once you’ve done all that you have to sign out your hunting area.

You take a couple of classes. It’s all archery, except for a couple of days of muzzleloader/shotgun. You cannot have any firearm on base aside from those days and carries federal fines if you’re caught with even one bullet. Then you sign up for an area and they have antler restrictions. Was pretty good hunting there. I haven’t been in yrs though so some of that may have changed.

Mil / Ret Mil / DoD Civ, and some contractors can hunt there. You have to register firearms through the on-post security office, watch a safety video, have an approved state hunter education cert, then get a RSA hunting permit. The folks at Outdoor Recreation will help you with any questions you have. The test ranges are good spots because they are usually closed for most of the season. Their amount of being open varies from year to year. They have minimum antler restrictions (15" spread or main beam length) for bucks.
