Has anyone ever had a run in with the warden on this? Do they go by the time off the forecast? Anxious to know what my neighbor gets charged with/for. See the warden rolling up to his listening spot, he been getting some complaints.

Depends... what critter?

For deer, it's 30min after official sunset time. Today's sunset is posted as 4:47, so legal hunting would end at 5:17pm.

For ducks, it would be 4:47pm.

I do not know anyone personally who has got in trouble for shooting deer after time (except for pure night hunting in the headlights), but I do know some boys that got a pile of tickets for shooting a woodduck hole after posted sunset one day.

He’s a deer hunter… it’s nothing to hear em go bang at 5:30 up and down this holler… but I ain’t got the optics for that.

I don’t personally know anyone that has been ticketed for it, but I do my best to not get one myself. It’s hard and certainly tempting. Especially when you have good optics and KNOW that you can still judge deer and make the shot with ease.

I have never heard of someone getting a ticket for this with deer. I personally hunt as late as I can. It depends on where I’m hunting too though. If it is somewhere that has strict rules I don’t sit real late because I don’t wanna be tempted and be wrong 😂

I don’t sit late because you can’t judge a deer well enough 30 min after sunset except on rare occasions.

One sunset time doesn’t apply to the whole state. Sunset in Heflin is listed as 442pm, sunset in Epes is 455pm. Big difference from east to west across the state.

^^as above, there are official times but there are variations from locale to locale. Where I hunt is midway between two towns which are about 10 miles apart E-W. Todays sunset times are Beatrice(east 4:52pm), Natchez(middle 4:53) and Franklin on the west at 4:45. The Beatrice and Franklin times are both from Time&Date and the Natchez time is from the OA app. Give your location within that area and particular site conditions I’d feel comfortable shooting between 30 and 35 minutes after any of those times.

Yup and it’s comical some folks think otherwise

Law is clear, 30 min after sunset for any given area.
Ive heard shots well after that, like 10-15min , when it is quite dark.

I just heard a shot a few seconds ago. No way they can see. Probably a road hunter.

lol I had a GW tell me this, with a wry grin, a few years ago. He said that because of the advances in optics, that he mainly was looking for obvious violations, not for hunters shooting a "few" minutes past the limit.

I think that this is probably the case. Wasn’t it just a few years ago that the standard was 30 minutes after last light?

Not the standard it's the law. 30 min before or after official sunrise and sunset time for the area. It changes by a minute or two each day. You can usually find it on your local weather forecast.

You can still see clearly at the legal cut off time.

100% UNLESS YOU HAVE BEEN WATCHING HIM FOR A FEW MINUTES PRIOR (which is probably your 1%)
