Well , it sure as hell didn't perform as it should . I'd call that bullet failure.

You were giving some bad advice. Thats better advice for a quartered away shot, not a quartered to shot.

I’ve killed more deer than most folks ever will and I’ve not once had a bone deflect a 150+ grain projectile traveling at 2600+ fps. I’ve heard of ppl having it happen, but I’ve never personally seen it. They usually push right right through with great expansion. I guess that’s why I’m so confused. It’s not something I’ve seen in all my years of hunting.

This is the best guesstimation I can think of for this
The only thing that anyone can do besides guess is to chalk it up as one of those weird things that happens occasionally
Ive had two strange things to happen like this
One was on a deer and the other was on a black bear
Both shots were broadside and 50yds +-
On both animals the opposite shoulder looked to be disconnected and the leg flopping
Found very little blood and never found either animal and I did have a dog on the deer later that day but unfortunately the bear was way up in the mountains and I quit after 3 days of searching

Long ago when I shot partitions I’d heard of the bullet separating into two or tumbling because the core somewhat separated. Are they bonded now because I dont think they were back then.

Congrats to you and your son staying after him.

Seen a 3/4” pine limb shot into 5 feet in front of one of the best deer I ever pulled the trigger on and the bullet didn’t touch the deer. Makes perfect sense to me. Although I haven’t seen one turn like that after hitting a bone, I know it’ll do it after hitting something softer.
This was a .300 win shooting 165 or 175 Barnes x. Can’t remember which.

Congrats to the youngster!

I’m just glad y’all were able to recover the deer and also glad it was shot with a 308 and partitions (every boomers favorite combo)😁. Cause we both know if it had been a 243, it wouldn’t have simply been chalked up to 💩 happens . “Not enough gun” would have most certainly been culprit according to the masses.

I’ve heard of more issues with ammo the last couple years more than ever, I think with the rising cost of everything ammo manufacturers are just not making as good of a product they once did, just my theory

I’m going with a faulty bullet too. When I read your initial story of what happened my first thought was the bullet wasn’t made correctly, and everyone here beat me to it. I’m glad y’all recovered him!

Had something similar happen to me several years ago shooting a 300 win mag with 180 grain core lokts. Shot the buck behind the shoulder on his right side and the bullet exited back in the guts on his right side. The buck was standing pretty much broadside at the shot. Scratched my head about that one for a while but I haven’t shot core lokts since.

Congrats to your son, and glad you recovered the deer!

I had a bullet to deflect similar to that with a Contender years ago. It was 7x30 Waters and a Colorado bonded bullet, and most of it deflected the way yours did. Part of it broke off and went through the lungs, so the deer went down quickly, but I was not happy with that bullet performance.

Most everyone here will disagree, but I don't think you can beat a NBT from a 308. I have shot a bunch of deer with mine over the last 30 years and one of my bullets would have just blown a big hole through that deer. I don't like a NBT in a smaller caliber, and have seen deer lost with them in a 243 or such. I think using them in small calibers is what has given them a bad reputation. It produces dead deer in a 30 caliber at 308 or 30-06 velocity.

Perhaps it hit a rib on an angle and the front half of the partition fragmented off and went sideways. Of course that would leave you with another exit hole too.

I will say my son shot a buck about that size and the exit hole was at a strange angle I could never explain. I chalked it up to the buck being at a different angle than I remembered and my mind playing tricks on me. But you appear to have this kill on video .
