Crazy things happen when you hit some of those big body deer.

Just one of those weird things that happen when hunting.

"Cull" is just another four letter word...

Glad you were able to find him. Congrats to your son.

I have no idea how that happened. Are you sure you werent elevated above the deer? Do you have a hot air balloon or helicopter?

Do you think the bullet could have possibly been "key holing"? I have a buddy, the almost exact thing happened to him 3-4 years ago, also in 308.

The first hunter's bullet had deflected and had gone around the deer's rib cage under the skin. The processor found the bullet under the skin by the deer's back hip. Never hit anything vital. Crazy things happen. I don't know what caliber he was shooting.

This is exactly what happened to me over 30 years ago. Enough bullet fragments entered the vitals to kill him I guess. Luckily I found the deer about 200 yards away just by walking a trail. This was 25 yo pine timber which was recently burned and it was easy to see him. There was no blood trail and may have never found him if it had not burned.

First track of the year for me was for a lady that shot a buck with a crossbow sitting on the ground. Entrance and exit on the same side with the deer standing broadside. Never really did understand it.

Matt i went up to a 180 grain Hornady because of the same issues out of my 308 . Each time i shot and recovered a deer it had a pen hole in it and very little blood . So happy for little man and glad you finally were able to recover the deer for him .

You sure she wasn’t using a boomerang?

I've had bullets turn but never that bad . Setting here thinking I remember back when I was using 165 partition in my 3006 I shot one going away . Hit him just behind the last rib bullet came out mid way of ribs on the other side . Bullet should have came out between the front legs.

Shot a doe with 270 130 boattail looking at me . I hit the shoulder bone bullet ran down the inside of rib cage on that side. Should have came out mid gut on the other side .

Bullets do strange things he just found that golden bb . Some thing he'll never have happen again .

Nice deer btw

Agreed. Didn’t open an acted like an FMJ. Store bought or did you load? Either way contact the manufacturer and see what they say.

Edit. I wouldn’t trust the others in the box…
