For those of you that has planted summer plots, what’s been your better blend? I’ve planted corn and cow peas for years and few soybeans here and there. But always wondered if there was something else that would make more tonnage with better protein. Have all the equipment needed to plant. “Plows, tractors, no till drills and sprayers” here on the farm. Most plots are 1-2 acres per size, be 8-10 acres worth in all.

IC peas were our go-to summer rotation. We tried soybeans but, with our 1ac plots and hogs, they didn’t last two weeks past germination. I tried joint vetch this past summer and had decent results despite having almost no rain.

Try sorghum and cow pea’s maybe throw in some sun hemp. I wish I could still grow peas but too many deer and too small greenfields.

Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

Sunflowers and peas have worked for me. I just buy the black oil sunflower seeds from TSC. We never see the full flower because the deer eat the bud defore it matures.

It be's that way sometimes.

I’d forget corn unless you have a dedicated field of 7-10 acres minimum. Otherwise it’s gone before season comes in and misses the summer stress period.

Jointvetch as mentioned earlier would be good. A blend with sorghum,ic peas, sun hemp, buckwheat and sunflowers will produce for a while, but you basically have zero weed control options.

"Cull" is just another four letter word...

Sunn hemp and a mix of soybeans and clay peas work. If you need some cover, add buckwheat.

If you want a mix, whitetail powerplant is awesome too.

Ladino clover as a base, and a 50/50 mix of clay peas and soybeans. No till it wide so it doesn’t crowd the clover too much. Works better in larger plots.

My best success was with rr forage beans and corn together. But I plant 7-8 acres. I don’t know any typical Summer plot that’s gonna be successful in 1-2acre plots unless your density is terrible.

WMS pea patch is a real good mix and it provides so much summer tonnage. Only problem is planting it in smaller plots.

I planted a 7 acre patch of it and it never got over 3 inches. I'm sure I've got way more deer than the average land though.

Yeah it would seem so. Lol. I’ve planted a few plots in it from 2-10 acres in moderate deer densities and it did very well.

RR Soybeans. Easiest thing to grow, because of the weed control option. Unless you want to plant Alfalfa.
