I have a couple of the under layer sets mentioned above and they are great but can be pricey. Woods and Water in Tuscaloosa sells Terramar 4.0 military fleece and they run a sale for 19.99 per piece on Black Friday. I actually stopped in today and bought sets for myself and the kids. I’ve used them for several years now and have been very pleased. Plus, a good under layer set for $40 is hard to find in some of the ones mentioned above.

Watch camofire for the black ovis merino wool layers. They are on there every 2 weeks.

I've had some terramar in the past that was pretty good but not as heavy as the 4.0 ill check them out online. Thanks for all the suggestions. Planning on getting a jacket with windstopper too.

Duofold is the best base layer for the money in my opinion. Like Wahoo said, I have some from the early 90s I still wear, the new stuff with the draw string is what I wear in super cold. It holds up to ozone too.

First Lite, I wear a wool wick top and bottom under my furnace heavy weight wool layers. Top it with fleece. and then some DWR outerwear for coldest days, and I strap them to my climber or backpack otw in.

When's it gonna get cold enough to wear a jacket?

I have some of those , they are great. I outgrew mine though.

Best top base layer I ever had was a $3 merino wool sweater I got at good will. It had a polo-type collar and I cut it off with a pair of scissors. It was thin and WARM - like you better not wear it if you had a long walk in. My wife accidentally washed and dried it in the drier and it came out a size too small.

Wools legit, especially when wet.

Wearing dry suits and flight suits for over 24yrs, often in frigid regions, I was issued almost every base layer that's been out. My base layers from Massif are my choice, my poly-pros were ok as well. Pretty sure mine are the Hot Johns

Not from my experience. It takes longer to dry out than synthetics do too.

True but, it still insulates and keeps ya warm even when wet. Used it 5yrs in Michigan, 6yrs in Ak and in Montana. Wet fleece was kind of useless.

I find them both to be useless when wet. Being wet is being wet. Wool doesn’t keep me warm when wet. That has been a big myth for me.
