The key to the turbo motors is keeping the oil changed. 2014 3.5 Lariat 4x4 that is just about to hit 160k. No motor or trans issues. Just started to notice a valve cover leaking oil.

I bought a 2016 F150 3.5 brand new and sold it this past year with 180k miles on it. Loved it and NEVER had a problem. Tons of power and good on gas. My wife now has an Expedition with the 3.5 and we love it. My 'Stang has the 5.0. All good engines. I wouldn't steer anyone one way or another, but the 3.5 Eco is a nice engine.

I’ve had two of the 3.5 trucks and replaced the turbo coolant lines on both. I would never own another eco boost of any kind.

2016 F150 with the 3.5 EcoBoost. Love it. 128k miles and only engine “trouble” so far has been an O2 sensor.

What I love about it and what no one has mentioned is how they each make power. Had a 14 company truck with a 5.0 and it would get on down the road, when you let it rev high. About 3000-3500 rpm it came alive and would go. Well.

My 3.5 starts pulling good around 1500 rpm and by 4500 is about done and needs to shift up. Lots more torque down low in the rev range, where and how I like it. I’m SURE a turbo will eventually need replaced as will lots of other maintenance items. Anything man made is going to fail eventually.

Nothing wrong with a 5.0 but mine will out run it, out pull it, get better mileage and be much more pleasant to drive (to ME).

YMMV

We got 5 f150 at work,2014 up to 2018…and all have the 5.0v8..my 2018 has 99k miles and is awaiting the auction block..transmission is burnt up and the motor burns 2.5 quarts of oil ever 1200-1500 miles..class action suit agains ford for the fact that they wont recall the 2017-current trucks due to piston ring failure..it was a bet whether my engine went first or my transmission. We have another 2018 that has similar issues…the other trucks dont have the oil consumption problems but all have had water pump failure under 75k miles, just replaced a transmission in one..all have had to have the ac compressor replaced, almost all have serious cam phasor noise..you can get in any if them and feel like your in a truck with 300k miles an the highest miles on one is like 140k miles..we are slowly getting rid of them..we have went back to gmc..i cant say that was an improvement..but these fords have been junk…they are all the lowest trim level work trucks..4x4 with the 5.0 v8..🤷🏻

3.5 is fine for running around. I’ve got one in my company truck. If I have to use a truck to do pulling and such, I use my personal truck with the 5.4. Everyone talks about how the 3.5 outperforms all the V8’s but honestly I just don’t see it in my personal experience.

I have the 2019 with the 2.7, zero issues. The only towing I do is my Lund boat which is not that heavy. My friend in Texas has the 3.5 and tows construction equipment with it all over west Texas. He just bought the shop a second F150 with the 3.5.

The 2.7 was actually designed to be a twin turbo motor. The 3.5 not so much.

I drove a couple of the ecoboost. They het great fuel milage and when tou want to pass somebody it will go. No complaints from me. But If I was going to pull anything I would get the 5.0.

What kind of real world mileage do the eco boosts get?

I got 21 to 22 around town. If I was on a road trip I got 24mpg.

My 2.7 stays at 19 . Unless I'm pulling my 24' cape horn, then about 12.

I’ve had 6-7 eco boost 3.5 in wife’s expedition and my f150. I’ve had 2 eco both on the expedition need variable cam tensioners. Mine were all under warranty and traded before it expired but I hear this is a job you don’t want to be stuck paying for. I have a 5.0 in my f150 now and have been happy so far 9k miles. Her expedition has no motor options other than 3.5 eco so it will be gone before the warranty. Her 2020 eco had the variable cam tensioners done 3 times. Under 30k miles. Starts out sounding like something is rattling under the truck when you start it.

2019 F150 with the 3.5. Really like the way the motor runs in daily driving and towing. More disappointed in the F150 towing than the motor itself. It and the transmission work well together. 70k miles give or take. The downside? Cam phasers have been done twice. Yes, that grinds my gears.

It certainly sounds like it from this thread.

I'm scared to buy a Chevy or a Ford thanks to this forum.

Ive got a 2013 lariat with the 3.5. I absolutely love it. It has 184,000 miles and still runs and drives like new. I keep the oil changed with synthetic and its just keeps going.

I think everyone's expectations have increased on durability and performance with the increase of pricing and they just can't correlate. Trucks are triple what they were 12-15 years ago and not nearly produced as well. Problems with all makes/models along with better visability for all failures with increased forums and inter webs. I'm concerned about buying anything new but I have had both 3.5 ecoboost and 5.0 and didn't have a problem with either. Typically I'm pretty hard on equipment and had no issues from either but did sell both before 120k miles. My experience was the 3.5 would out pull the 5.0 easily and was more enjoyable to drive.
