The plan is to go after them Thanksgiving morning. Hopefully they will hang around that long.

I wish I was. I’m taking my dog to one of those continental pheasant shoots so she can pick up birds but I won’t be shooting. Good dog work is the best part. Problem with those continental shoots is too many not so good dogs.

Problem with those continental shoots is too many not so good dogs. I went to one a few weeks ago and a guy brought his poodle. Just a house dog he had never been trained. The dog ran all over the place from dead bird to dead bird, but didn’t pick up a single bird. And the owner couldn’t understand why he wasn’t a “bird dog”.

I saw a few Saturday morning in a recent cutover. Gonna try to walk them up and quail shoot them this weekend. Probably won't be very effective, but for sure more fun than deer hunting. I’ve had a lot of fun doing that pcp.
Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

When I was a teenager we had a big cutover not far from the house. 800 acres of so. Dad would buy a permit for us to hunt it every year, mainly for deer and rabbits. But I’d ride my four wheeler down them old roads and jump shoot doves off the 4 wheeler. Man I killed a bunch of them that way. I would usually be the only person on the place in early dove season. Perfect combo back in them days, riding the 4 wheeler shooting stuff. Lol Well, I am way too old to risk trying to shoot from an ATV. I've done a good bit of this type of hunting through the years, and have killed a good many at times. I don't remember ever getting a limit, but have gotten 8 to 10 several times. With no dog, the most challenging part is finding the dead birds. I've learned to not be greedy and always just shoot one at a time and watch him down. It seems to me that we had a lot more doves 20 years ago. I would see a lot more in a new cutover back then than what I see now. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Not getting greedy and only shooting one was the main ticket. You could watch it fall and greatly improve your chances of finding it. Now did always do that? Not at all, Lol. But that is the way to do it.

My bunch went this morning. 30 minutes of insanity about sunrise followed by a light trickle. Zero complaints. Going to squeeze in another shoot tomorrow afternoon before season goes out again.

A fellow has gotta be pretty desperate for some wingshooting to resort to walking up doves in a cutover. Most of the birds isaw last week had disappeared. I did walk up one bunch; dropped one into the road so I risked a shot at another one. Took 20 minutes to find the second one, but recovered both and never saw anymore. Maybe some Yankee birds will fly in for the last season.

Man we’ve got more birds in North AL than we did in september, or we did. They will be gone before Monday I know that.
