So many people shooting 165 and 180 grains in 30-06. I always felt that was overkill for Southern deer. Just surprised so many people shooting these large bullets.

150 has see to do the best . Imo

No such thing as overkill.

There are posts pretty regular, or have been, about hunting with 35 Whelen, 338-06, .50 Beowulf and 350Legend or 458 socom. Bullet size and grain seems to matter very little to the ALdeer crowd. I prefer the 165gr(that I use) because they shoot best in my rifle and have never let me down. So I stick with that. Deer are just as dead as if I shot them with a 150. No deader. They also cost the same at the time.

If you aren't shooting past 250 to 300 yards the 150 grain is a fine.

If you have been using the super-x silvertips that they discontinued then I think you'll want another deeper penetrating round. If you are shooting the newer ballistic tip silvertips (which I dont like) then look for any of the rapid expansion bullets. The other posts are right that the old style corelokts have killed a bunch of deer.

I'm down to my last box of super-x silvertips in both 30-06 and 270. I only have been using the 270 for the last 15 years, so I was in the same boat as you. To replace them (super-x) I went with Nosler trophy grade with the 130gr partitions. Many will argue that the accubond is the better whitetail round, but I decided to go with partitions. Found a good deal online ($48) and bought 4 boxes. I have 8 silvertips left... so I dont have results from my decision yet. We will see if coyotes rush my transition.

Semo, the most blood i ever saw come out of a deer was at the hand of a 257wbymag partition. Looked like a massacre had taken place, it was gruesome

Because of 1) ballistics and 2) no having to worry about shooting magic bullets

You never want to shoot a light for caliber bullet they offer no advantage only disadvantages... heavier bullets typically have better ballistics which means they are always superior it's not an opinion it's math.

The difference in the max point blank range of a 30-06 shooting a 150 vs 180 is less than 20 yards. Increased speed by shooting a lighter bullet is a non-factor.... that's the entirely wrong way to think about this. But many people incorrectly do.

No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

Make your own. I have been using 150 grain SST bullets but recently switched to 168 grain TTSX.

Remington 150gr Swift Scirocco Bonded since when I got it, it was the only box I could find (during the Covid madness). Shot 8pt last year from 125yds...he went about 20 yds and pilled up. I do agree that basically any of them will take down a deer unless you are shooting very long range. These are not really that inexpensive compared to others.

Scircco's are great bullets. I shoot them out of my 300 WSM and they flat out smash. Unlike a lot of bonded core bullets, the Sciroco's expand really well.

I know some folks don't like them, but I never had a deer run more than a few yards after a hit with them, and most just pile up. on the spot.

I generally test 3-4 different brands, then stock up on whatever the rifle shoots best.
