Irishguy mentioned another celebrity of a bygone age. Lewis Grizzard. I used to look forward to his column and read a good many of them over the years. It always seemed to bring a chuckle. There's several quotes from his comedic wisdom that are worth sharing. Here are a few.

Life is like a dogsled race. If you're not the lead dog, the view doesn't change much.

If you want something sweet, order the pound cake. Anyone that puts sugar in cornbread is a heathen that doesn't love the Lord, not to mention Southeastern Conference football.

It's better to have died as a small child than to be a politician that gets caught in a scandal in a slow news week.

Apparently that last one isn't necessarily true these days. But being a politician is bad enough.

Lewis Grizzard was a great writer. May be a small blessing that he isn't around to see Atlanta today.
His books about his Mother and Dad are some of my personal favorites. I carried his books from 29 Palms to Incirlik Turkey and a lot of points in between.

I always looked forward to reading Lewis. Patrick McManus was another.

In a local flavor George Smith of the Anniston Star, there was a lady named Downing that was tragically killed in a car wreck that was good too.
Smiley Anders down in Louisiana was another that I liked to read.

That dude was good. I remember the days of getting the newspaper and looking forward to actual content like him. Finebaum (love him or hate him) writing columns. The editorial section had legitimate conservatives debating viewpoints with opposing views that were nowhere near what the "woke left" is now. Imagine all that compared to Al.com trash nowadays.

Lewis Grizzard wrote some books that were funny too.

I'm told at Lewis's funeral Uga great Buck Belew Said he would miss playing in Lewis's smart azz white boy golf tournament. Below immediately apologized for saying azz in church. I miss Grizzard.

Sorry, not on the same page. I lost my grandson just before he turned 4 months old. I wish he felt grass, got to swing, say hi to grandpa, eat some ice cream. Did Lewis Grizzard lose a child/grandchild to be experienced in his comments?

I'm truly sorry for your loss. We've all lost someone but I have never personally lost a child or grandchild. I have no idea if Lewis lost one or not. I do know that your grandson gets to know what Heaven and our Creator and Savior are like. That is something most will never get to experience.

I've probably read all of Lewis's books and got to meet him once in Birmingham.

Look him up on Youtube and listen to some of his comedy. He had a gravely southern voice and was great at delivering the punch line.

He certainly had a flair for comedic timing. I sure wish that ole pig valve had kept him around a little longer.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I'm surprised anyone actually reads my posts, but yeah, Lewis Grizzard was a great comedic writer. A modern day Mark Twain if there ever was one. Anyone who loves to read should revisit some of twain's books.

I mentioned one of his books in another thread "Innocents Abroad" about the first steam ship tour of the World and he was on it. He observed both the people on it and the people and places they went and wrote what is basically a very funny, satirical, yet thoughtful and poignant book travelog about it.

If you are very solid in your faith in God, you should read "Letters from Earth" by Twain. It's a book about Lucifer and Michael. They remain in contact after Lucifer is cast out from Heaven and stay in touch as pen pals with Lucifer writing back to Michael telling him stories about how strange human beings are. It's an amazing book that was actually banned for quite some time.

Another good set of book is "The Diary of Adam and The Diary of Eve" it's about man and woman relationships and even though it's really funny and satirical it get very beautiful towards the end, about why we love women. Great stuff.

Two newer writers that are still alive today that I like to read are: Dave Barry & Sean Deitrich

Barry is (was) a humor columnist for the Miami Herald and is just a super funny guy with some very funny observations of the human race. He writes columns, stories and books.

Sean Deitrich "Sean of the South" is a super funny southern guy who is very humble, but also writes some very touching stories. You can sign up to get his daily column delivered to your inbox. He's doing his stand up show here in Fort Payne soon and we are going to see it.
