When I was about 14 , me a two other guys went camping on horses in the mountains near where I live. We were in a little 3 man tent . That night several tornados hit Northeast Alabama . You talk about a rough , long night!

We've had 2 tornadoes touch down on our farm since we moved here in 1983. 4/27/11 I saw 6 tornadoes and/or funnel clouds that day while visiting chicken farms. Saw the 7th from our front window after I got home that day. It was the one that skirted the brow of the mountain off Hwy 79 south of Guntersville. Never seen a day like that before, and hope I never do again. I found 2 pictures of black girls dressed in school uniforms that next June in our hay field, while cutting hay. No idea how far those had to fly in the air, but they weren't from anywhere around here. Likely from B'ham or Tuscaloosa.
But the most scared of my life I've ever been was when I was 18 or 19. A buddy of mine and I were fishing on lake Guntersville. We put in at the ramp on 431 at the bottom of the mountain as you go into Guntersville from Albertville. We rode in the boat from there, way up into Browns Creek. We fished for a while, then I noticed when we'd cast, that our line would stay suspended in the air for an unusually long time after casting. I didn't know what that meant, until that day. It wasn't long until a black wall of clouds came over the top of Brindlee mountain. Lighting was popping the lake all around us. We rolled em up as quick as we could and started back. I don't know how strong the winds were, but there were 5-6 foot waves on the big water between the big river bridge and Hwy 69. We were in my friends, dads, bass boat. It was a glass boat, but only 16' long. My friend had no idea how to drive a boat in those conditions, and I'm not sure anyone has any idea of how to drive a boat that small in those conditions. I was yelling at him to beach the boat. He kept yelling back that his dad would kill him if he did. I laid down in the bottom of the boat, so I wouldn't get tossed out. We finally got slightly ahead of it when we came past the feed mills. It never rained a drop on us, but the boat was about half full of water when we got back to the ramp. My little Toyota would barely pull it up the mountain. There was still water draining from the boat when we got back to my house. We were lucky to survive that. Got a good friend that owns Muscadine Creek Farms in Asbury. 94-95 tornado hit chicken houses across the road beside Tick Ducket's house and strowed all the insulation in front 2 pastures. He call me because his parents were on vacation and needed help getting cows in back pastures. I got there through all the chit on Martling road riding in the ditches. The tornado took the roof off the house, turned it about 12", then set it back down. Blew a wall out of the carport that had honey bees in it for decades. Comb was everywhere. Look at the inside wall of the carport and there was the grill, utinsils, and 4 folding chairs that never moved. That was the day I learned to never screw around when a tornado is headed in your direction.

'89 huntsville tornado. It touched down about 2 miles west of the parkway/airport road intersection. There wasn't an overpass there then. I was sitting at that red light looking at the wall cloud begging for the light to turn green. I figure i was 2-5min lucky. It killed several people on airport rd.
The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

I was indirectly shocked by lighting.
I was building a doghouse in an attached storage/laundry room. I grabbed a socket wrench that was on the dryer, when lighting struck outside our house. I guess it came in through the ground and chassis of the dryer. It didn’t burn me or anything, but my left arm was useless for about 10-minutes. Thankfully, there was no damage - but arm (especially elbow joint and hand) hurt pretty bad for a few days.
The worst part was my son was there with me and saw me get popped. I think it scared him more then me.

I got caught in a lightning storm one time while turkey hunting. Got up and took off running and there was lightning popping all around me.
Was fishing Mitchell one time and a storm blew up and a bolt of lightning hit the lake not too far from us. Seconds later every rod in the boat started vibrating. Sounded like a bunch of rattlesnakes buzzing. By some miracle we happened to be by an open boat house and I motored up into the slip. Seconds later lightning hit about 20 yards from us. I look up and some old dude was running across his yard and I thought he was about to fuss at us for being in his boathouse. He came in the door and told us not to move that is was about to get bad. He stayed there with us the entire time and it finally subsided. Nice old feller….. I often wonder if he’s still kicking. This was in the 90’s and he was on up there in age back then.

Tornado went over the house in Waldorf, MD and ripped up Laplata, MD. Baseball sized hail crazy I've seen a few naders in person over the years from afar, but I've never been up close and personal with one like some of you guys. Hope that trend continues.

I was heading south on the parkway trying to "skirt around the storm". Was on jordan lane fixin to get on 565 (the elevated portion wasn't complete then). Jerral Miller came on the radio and said not to go towards madison...baseball sized hail. So I thought i'd run around it to the south. Dern near drove right into the heart of it. I was about at the river when he came on the radio and said "tornado on the ground at the police academy" (which was just west of the parkway). You're correct though...blackest cloud i ever saw. It picked a buddy of mine's cotton field over off triana blvd. Wasn't enough lint left for a picker to run thru.

Also about the 1989 Huntsville storm:
I was teaching a class in an AIDT trailer at the old Onan plant at the airport when it came through. Everybody knew the weather was bad and wanted out of the trailer so I ended class early. When I left the plant, I saw a storm spotter sitting on the side of the highway. I pulled off and parked behind him, figuring if he left, I was leaving with him. We sat there until it passed.
I worked at Onan, but lived in Tuscumbia. My parents were bringing my wife and baby daughter up that night to see a Disney show at the VBCC. They left the Shoals just behind the storm, having to negotiate the debris at the old Arnold’s Truck Stop. On our way home that night, there were round pales impaled on the top of utility poles in front of Arnold’s. Lots of other strange sights, like 2x4’s driven into utility poles.
