I’ve never hunted with them but went on a track last year that was shot with one. Sub sonic 308 not sure of bullet weight. 125 yard back of one lung/liver/gut shot. Still very lively 16 hours after the shot so I definitely will not recommend them.

I have killed probably 30+ deer with .308 subsonics (shooting a 208gr AMAX handload at 1050 FPS). They will absolutely kill BUT you cannot expect them to perform like a supersonic rifle round because they flat out don't. A deer shot with a sub behaves exactly the way one shot with an arrow does. They do not drop dead right there and blood trails can be sparse, shot placement is very very important with a subsonic round (you want double lung and or heart). Also, subs drop very fast so anything over 70ish yards you're going to tend to have to hold over/adjust for that bullet drop. That being said though, I have not lost a deer with a sub and still shoot them from time to time in a hunting setting.

I got one or two back in the day with them. My opinion is that it’s really not much different than hunting with a .45ACP (ballistically). I’d generally advise against it unless there’s some special circumstance in which you feel they make more sense.

Recoil difference between subs and super’s are negligible.
Super’s have better ballistics and increase your chance of game recovery.

I handload some subsonic rounds for a buddy. It’s a 30 caliber. He’s killed a handful with it so far.

Hornady 190gr subsonic (SUB-X expanding) 300 blk works well when you aim like you are shooting a bow. Double lung, heart, stay behind leg/ shoulder, especially on exit. As long as ribs are the only bone involved, wound channel is good and exit hole is about the size of a quarter. Good blood trail usually if shooting from elevated stand so you have a lower exit hole. Not so good blood trail a with high exit hole, but that is generally true of any ammo or arrow.Exact yardage is critical with any subsonic, just like a bow. The difference in 90 and 105 yards matters. Much past there and 5 yard differences become important Zero recoil, almost no noise. Other deer standing nearby rarely react much to one of their buddies getting shot, the one that gets shot will react about like a bow shot, often short run then stop and look confused and fall over. Of course this is with a bolt action rifle and a good suppressor. AR15 style rifle is slightly louder, but still quieter than alot of bows. Don't know why anyone would want to shoot subs without a suppressor. Of course supers are better, unless your priority is being able to shoot at deer or coyotes or armadillos or anything else you want without spooking your deer.

After marginal success at several of the above mentioned options I have settled on 450 Bushmaster here. Gun is a Ruger American. This gives you the ability to shoot heavy pistol bullets... and since you are shooting pistol bullets at the velocity they should be moving they do expand.

All the other limitations apply regarding distance, etc. You are basically shooting a deer with a .45 Long Colt.

It will kill the crap out of one under 50 yards. A lot of this other stuff does work but in my mind this works better.

There was a dude on youtube shooting subsonic 458 socom rounds and killing deer. I think the bullets were 500 grains or more.

Bullets need to move fast. Thats my .02. I like em between 3500-4000fps.

I use 300blk and shoot subs regularly for hogs but I tend to choose 110gr supers for deer. There are some high dollar bullets, such as Lehigh and Makers, with impressive expansion at very low velocities. I don’t use those. I use the AMAX and a couple others. I shoot for the head when it’s doable so expansion isn’t as important.

What I’ve gathered from the information above is that a typical subsonic round the deer will react the same as being hit bow a compound bow at 30 yards. With a 6.5 creedmore subsonic round the deer will react the same as being hit with a recurve bow at 50 yards..😂🤣😂🤣thanks for the help gentleman

Haven't shot any with subsonic, but I can imagine they don't perform well. The lack of speed doesn't make for great penetration and a higher chance of no exit wound. I have shot hogs with subsonic .300 BLK and have had poor results. 223 has given me much better results vs hogs despite the smaller round.

Then there is the 8.6 BLK that has just come out...

It's a .338 round shot at subsonic speeds through a 1:3 twist barrel (insanely fast twist). Somehow this produces ridiculous penetration despite being subsonic. Like big game hunting level penetration. Definitely a purpose built round and weapon, but interesting nonetheless. Crazy expensive currently.

That 8.6 looks amazing…not feeling paying over 2 grand for the gun at this moment though 😂

300 whisper with a 220 grain outlaw state exot bullet is deadly. Never lost one but don’t shoot past 200 yards. I have dropped a bunch In their tracks.

When I got into subsonic doe killing the 8.6 did not exist. If your speed is fixed (subsonic) the the heavier the bullet the better. You just can’t shoot far.

Recovered one from a cull I shot last year and I bet the bullet was .9-1 inch wide. Tears up the insides with the long sharp petals. That deer went less than 10 yards. 125 yard shot.

Muzzle velocity is 1040.

I only load subsonic so I shoot the heaviest expanding bullet i can get. A regular high power rifle bullets is useless at subsonic velocities unless you are ok with loosing 20-25% of the deer you shoot based on my personal experience.

Just had a Subsonic round get stuck in my 30-06! Bought from a place out in TX that does custom ammo loads.. He is giving my money back, he is blaming it on the powder, me thinks he put a light load in that round. Done with subsonic crap. May have to take it to a gunsmith to get it out.

The 190 gr Sub X bullet us very accurate in my 308. 10.8 gr Trail Boss powder will give me 1050 FPS and one hole accuracy at 50 yards. Drop is about 10 MOA at 100 yards and still groups well at that range.
