Vision loss - switch sides or offset scope? #3971487

I am facing a significant loss of vision in my right eye. I am right handed and right eye dominant. My inquiries indicate I have two options in regard to rifle shooting: switch to left hand and left eye, or stay with right side and use an offset scope mount and continue to shoot right handed. Has anyone else dealt with this issue? Any advice on what works?

A scope that is not in vertical alignment with the bore is going to act weird at longer distances. Left to right zero is going to shift with distance. If it’s just used for short distances maybe won’t matter enough to keep you from killing a deer

You are right, that is a significant drawback to an offset sight. Longest shot I have ever made on a deer was 164 yards, so I am not sure it would make much of a difference to me, but definitely adds a complication.

I'm leaning towards learning how to shoot from the left side.

Just a thought....Is it legal to use electronic scopes (without night vision capabilities)? I know the ATN scopes will allow you to see what the scope sees on your phone. You can put the phone or whatever viewing screen wherever you want.

Outside of that I'd probably try and switch sides.

LASIK won’t work to correct your sight loss ?
If not then switch to left hand shooting
It not that complicated when you get used to it but it will take a while to adjust to shouldering when in a hurry to shoot

I wish LASIK would work. Unfortunately I have a choroidal melanoma close to the macula on my retina. It will require radiation treatment and my retina will sustain permanent damage. Pretty much sucks, but it could be worse. I caught it early enough, we think, that life will go on. I'm lucky to have the privilege of worrying about how I am going to hunt, not whether I be around to hunt at all.

I had to do the same thing due to an injury years ago.
I had to relearn how to shoot left handed.
After 26 years it still feels more natural to shoulder one right handed.

I still can't wing shoot like I used to be able to

I have the same problem, not be as bad as yours. I can still shoot right hand for now, but it gets a little worse every year. Been working on shooting left hand. Okay off bench or rest in shooting house, not so good off hand. I think it's better than an offset scope though.

I have also seen a offset stock you shoulder right handed but it put the gun in front of the left eye.

I just read an article, from Buckmasters Magazine of all places, that described rasping out a concave area in a right handed stock so the left eye aligns with the scope. I'd definitely have to try that on a beater stock first.

Now that’s cool, It would certainly be worth trying. Good luck with the stock and prayers lifted for your eye.

Switch to left side. It would take some getting used to but certainly doable. I’ve had 2 patients lose their dominant eye to trauma and have a prosthetic now and both just switched sides with little issue.

Are you going to Emory for the CM treatments? I’m really glad they caught it quick.

I'm left eye dominant, and shot long guns left handed until I was 45. Had an ICD put in on my left shoulder, and the docs told me I had to switch. Becoming a reasonably competent rifle shot wasn't that hard. I do note some fatigue if I'm sighting through the scope for several minutes. I now shoot a shotgun also right handed, with a small piece of clear tape over my LH glasses lens. Still have binocular vision, but can't acqure the bead or target with my left. I've always shot a pistol right handed, held straight out in front. A couple hours with a shotgun coach was probably the best money I ever spent.

Used to be a lifeguard, until that blue kid got me fired.

my uncle had a similar issue and bought an offset mount that i set up and sighted in for him. best i recall it was less than 3” off offset. set it up to shoot 1” left and 3” high at 100 yards. he killed another 10-15 deer with it before he died.

Give me bout 15 more minutes, I was dreamin about beavers..........

If you want to go the offset scope route there is an easy solution to the convergence problem. For example if the offset is 3 inches site the gun so your aim point is always 3 inches to the left of the impact point. This means the scope alignment should remain parallel to the bore alignment at all ranges versus trying to pick a convergence range. Being perfectly parallel is hard to achieve so err on the slightly converging side of alignment. In the field adjust your aim point accordingly and you should be good to go.

Get you a 22 and a patch over the right eye and go at it .

Shooting left handed ain't that hard . Easier for me with a single shot

I'm sorry to hear of your condition, but admire your attitude and I'm very glad it got caught early on. I have been shooting right handed guns, left handed, all my life. Don't worry about having to change out your gun collection. It'll work just fine.

Good to know! Yes, I am going to Emory, Dr. Jill Wells. My local doctor is Dr. John Myers out of Pensacola. I am very impressed with the care I have received so far.
