Reckon its possible, when building a new home, to set it up 100% off the grid? I mean no power line from Alabama power at all. And still be cool in the summer? I know really good insulation and mini splits make it possible these days. I have an unlimited supply of free wood, so heat in the winter wont be a problem. Im looking at eventyally building a A frame on some property we bought recently. Its gona be a few years yet. I would sure love to get free of Alabama power. I know solar is the biggest piece of the puzzle but what is the rest of it? I also know theres govt funding available for such things. Might just be a pipe deram but its something i dream about.

If you have a stream or spring you could do a hydro generator.

You’ll get acclimated to the heat, the Amish make it just fine. I have clients transported from prison and they freeze to death in the courtroom (no ac in prison).

It’s never been easier to find information/get off rid.

Solar, battery, Starlink, well or rain collection, propane, wood.

I’ve seen several videos on YouTube where people have done this very thing. I’d love to be able to do it as well.

I’m sure it’s possible. Cost is going to be the biggest factor. My parents got like 25 panels and 2 very large batteries and without the rebates it was around $110k. The batteries were $36k by themselves and they only get about 24 hrs worth of power WITHOUT a/c. Their house is 100 yrs old so it’s not energy efficient but the solar power doesn’t cool the house.

I'd try to use as many green "legs" as possible. Solar, wind, and hydro mix so if one goes a little sideways you got something to fall back on.

If I were going off grid, my house would be built into a hillside and utilizing geothermal heating and cooling systems, with tube skylights and solar panels....and ideally with gravity spring fed water system.

Define “Off The Grid”. Is that just free of the power grid? To be completely off the grid you’d have to become a ghost and in today’s world it ain’t happening.

It can be done. You just wouldn’t have a lot of modern conveniences

I think you'd need to make use of multiple renewable sources (solar, possibly micro hydro, if your site had a little wind) plus the propane tank option. The challenge in my mind is the peak heat periods. You could mitigate this problem by using a whole-house attic fan (I grew up on an attic fan, and still miss it) and then only cooling very small targeted areas of the house for the short periods of time you really had to have it. Like efficient mini splits into a small bedroom. The battery situation would need to be very well thought out. I think you would be good on heating, especially in your line of work. Burn baby burn on the wood.

You’d have no modern conveniences and no family because eventually the man would find you. Ask the Uni-Bomber. Kids couldn’t do without cellphones, Book of faces, or any other electronic devices.

I think I remember someone getting arrested in North Alabama a few years ago for having a completely off grid home. I can't remember the laws they said he broke but it was petty crap and the government definitely didn't like his self sufficiency.

Alabama power still going to hit you with a fee. Just to have power available if your solar doesn't work.

I unclogged a drain at this house in Shelby county a few years ago that was 100% off the grid. It was a nice house the best I can remember. I don’t think they stayed there 24/7, they had well water, solar power, wood burning stove, it was winter and I remember they had warm flooring, the indoor lighting was very dim.
