Make sure you lime, and fertilize and the ground holds moisture. If its a little shaded, that helps too. You will be surprised what happens next spring. Deer will be in it all the time.

Planted some Imperial clover in 18. Deer were big fans and mowed it down pretty well during season as you can see in this trail cam photo.

They didn’t seem to care for it much in the summer. Always had trouble controlling weeds and with drought stress. I now opt for a fall blend which the deer like even more in my opinion and a spring blend that deer like more and that holds up to drought stress.

Probably gonna convert some acres back into perennial clover. Weed problems can probably be solved with some better herbicides.

And definitely plant along with a cover crop of sorts because it’ll take a little bit to establish. Don’t expect a solid stand of clover the first season.

Whitetail Institute is a decent product. When I was a distributor for Biologic and had the online store, Whitetail Institute contacted about carrying their products. I researched it and seemed like a good product but opted to stick with Biologic exclusively as my only food plot seed. Biologic treated me very well and their products were excellent. Sold a bunch of their food plot seed back in the day and shipped it all over the country. Fun business compared to insurance. rofl

My deer stayed in it year round, but the last couple summers have been super dry and hot, and the clover tends to go dormant in those conditions. I think down here in the south, it's a fantastic small plot food source, but these bigger plots that get a lot of sun, it's tough to keep it alive, especially when you have days with a heat index over 100.

Their power plant is awesome in the summer.

Agreed. Clover often doesn’t do well in the hot, sunny plots.

Perennial clovers need to be planted in north to south facing plots so they get evening shade.

I have planted several different varieties of WI products over the years, and here is my opinion. If you are planting a fall annual plot, save your money and buy a cheaper brand, or mix your own. However, if you are looking to plant a clover-based perennial plot, hard to beat Fusion or Alfarack. The clover they use is very good stuff, and deer love the chicory during the warmer months. I planted an Alfarack plot in which the clover and chicory lasted for 5 years with minimal maintenance. The alfalfa in the mix did not last nearly as long, so I would probably recommend Fusion instead of Alfarack. For a summer annual plot, I have had good luck with Powerplant.

I’ve had good luck with it in Ms.
I’ve been spraying a patch with gly to kill the grass and I’m letting that work a couple weeks and then plan to plow and plant third week of Sept.
I’m going to plant one side of the plot in Durana and the other in WI Imperial. I suspect the WI side will get more use, as that’s what I’ve read and I know the deer like it from experience. I just wanted to do a little experiment of my own. This plot is separated really good by a narrow neck and L shape, so I’ll be able to tell what is preferred.

I get a lot from Hancock Seed. They have different blends and free shipping on most. A lot is sold out for this year.

I use Greenpoint AG over in Trussville. I call or email for a price list, then email them my order and tell them when I want to pick it up, and its all loaded on pallets and shrink wrapped.

In the end, it's all about soil pH. If your soil pH is acidic, then it doesn't matter what you plant and don't think that green food plots means you're a great food plotter. Ryegrass will look really green and it'll grow on a bowling ball and that's about what it tastes like too. If Ryegrass is in your blend, you better question the seed company's knowledge or integrity. It's cheap, for sure. If you can't afford to lime AND fertilize, then LIME! Soil pH is the difference.

Oh hell, here comes the: "I been deer huntin' fer 40 years and my deer eat ryegrass just fine!" Yeah buddy... keep planting it.

Do you guys plant the Alfa Rack and Fusion in the fall, or go for it in the spring?

Lol yup…rye grass looks great and green but there’s a reason it gets tall 😂

I planted mine in mid Sept. in North AL. It might not look that great the first fall/winter, but should come on strong in the spring & then look much better next fall.
