I am going to Tx next year for a deer hunt. I read the TSA instructions on checking weapons and the way I’m reading it sound like you have to have the weapons and ammo seperate. Is this correct. TKS

I did a Texas hunt a few years ago, and yes, that was the rule. Back then anyway.

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

Last time I flew, you could have the ammo in the same locked case, but the gun had to be unloaded.

Be prepared for everything related to that to be different in every airport that you fly from.

My last trip flying with rifles made me want to drive for every hunt and never fly again.

Ammo has been in the same case as my guns everytime I’ve flown. Non TSA locks on the gun case.

83% of all statistics are made up.

Straight from the TSA's website....

Quote
Ammunition
Ammunition is prohibited in carry-on baggage, but may be transported in checked baggage.
Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or empty, must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm. Read the requirements governing the transport of ammunition in checked baggage as defined by 49 CFR 175.10 (a)(8).
Small arms ammunition (up to .75 caliber and shotgun shells of any gauge) must be packaged in a fiber (such as cardboard), wood, plastic, or metal box specifically designed to carry ammunition and declared to your airline.
Ammunition may be transported in the same hard-sided, locked case as a firearm if it has been packed as described above.
You cannot use firearm magazines or clips for packing ammunition unless they completely enclose the ammunition. Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or empty, must be boxed or included within a hard-sided, locked case.
Please check with your airline for quantity limits for ammunition.

Also, in regards to locks on gun cases...again, straight from the TSA's website....

Quote
Only the passenger should retain the key or combination to the lock unless TSA personnel request the key to open the firearm container to ensure compliance with TSA regulations. You may use any brand or type of lock to secure your firearm case, including TSA-recognized locks.

As hunterbuck said, ammo in factory box in same case and a non tsa lock and you are good to go. Stick around outside security for a few minutes anfter checking the gun and they may or may not have you to unlock case for them.

Ammo has to be in original packing—- is the rule. Can be in the same case as the gun. Can only carry a certain amount

This was my understanding when I've flown with a rifle. Anyways, the original ammo box will help prevent questions that may arise beyond the standard , "Is it unloaded". I had the original unopened ammo box in the gun case and had no issues, other than chuckling when I went on an archery hunt and the B'ham TSA lady asked if my bow was unloaded?

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

And the hard case, which wasn't mine was beat to $hit when we got to Texas. My Bro in Law was smarter. He put his guns in a hard case for golf clubs. No damage to his.

That is not the rule. Ammo has to be in packaging specifically meant for carrying ammo. For example, this is legal....

Flown maybe a 1/2 dozen times or so and no issues but I much rather drive if possible. Just not as stressful

Ammo no longer has to be separate but it has to be in the factory box or a box made for ammo. Not in the magazine.

Nope. While the "original box" is always corect that is not the only thing that ammo can be packed in. Ammo just must be packaged in a fiber (such as cardboard), wood, plastic, or metal box specifically designed to carry ammunition and declared to your airline.

This. I flew this summer on 2 different airlines. American and United had me fill out a simple form saying I was in compliance. Never checked my pistol case. Simple.

I’d opt for the non tsa locks. I was the range one day and a guy was shooting down from me. Was saying tsa messes with his scope. Was shooting some high dollar set ups. Two different rifles and scopes and couldn’t cut paper at 25. Said he was checking zero after an out of state hunt. Was sighted in and deadly before he boarded the plane. I told him to max out elevation and wind age then count down to the next bottom and then meet half way to start fresh . He was tired for shooting and left

We flew out west in July and I carried two hand guns in one locked case. A box of ammo and two magazines for each. Magazines were empty and I added a cable lock to each. I had a label with my name , address and phone number on the case. I walked up to the counter and stated”I need a declaration for a case inside of this suitcase.”Filled it out and they attached it and checked to make sure the locks on the case were closed. That was it. TSA never asked for my keys on the way out or on the way back.

I flew out of Atlanta last November then back from Bozeman. I have a plano hard case, put a long on every eyelet and had 3 boxes of shells in the case with my rifle. I had the bolt out of my rifle. It was a super easy deal. Went to a special desk they had me open the case make sure the gun was uploaded. Put a signed tag in the case and gave me a barcode thing to keep with me to pick up the case at my destination.

I used to fly out to hunt in Idaho. The only time I ever had an issue was one time when I stayed in Seattle for one night. They tried their best to destroy my SKB case and rifle. If you are not staying over in a city like Seattle or Portland, you should be fine as far as intentional damage. At that time ammo had to be seperate from the rifle.
