Got a situation. Need some advice. There’s a row of large crape myrtles in a bed in between my two driveways. Well, I’ve not been a very good groundskeeper. There’s sweet gum, privet, other crap growing under the crape myrtles. Is there anything I can spray to kill the brush but not the crape myrtles? Figure the aldeer brethren court might know. I’m gonna ask Extension office too. Wife on my arse to get it under control.

Anything that will kill brush, will kill Crepe Myrtles. You'll have to cut the bad stuff off, and paint the stem with something with Triclopyr in it.

2 oz of round up per gallon of water and just spray the weeds. Don’t spray the crape myrtles and you will be fine.

Define growing under. Is there a way to apply herbicide on the foliage of the stuff under the crepe myrtles? If so you can use a mix of gly and Triclopyr on the gum, privet, etc without harming the ornamentals. Just don’t use a surfactant or you could risk it absorbing into the bark of the crepe myrtles. I’ve been getting good kill on gum with straight gly same with privet.

Sounds like a perfect scenario for a chain saw and a healthy dose of stump spray gly afterwards. Also a perfect opportunity to kill them dang crepe myrtles. This, kill it all!

As others have said, there is nothing that you can selectively kill that mix with that won’t kill the myrtles. If the undesirable foliage is below the foliage of the crepe myrtles, you could try some roundup, but sweetgum may come back. Also, anything getting on the thin bark can easily penetrate, damaging those also. That is just a tough scenario. Cutting individual stems and treating the cut surface is the safest bet.

I’m really trying to figure out why y’all say round up will penetrate crape myrtles bark. I’ve been in the commercial landscape industry for 23 and never had an issue with it.

I tend to agree with this statement. When I was doing landscaping I cut a bunch down for a customer, sprayed the per stump with 41% gly straight out of the jug, layer fabric over the stump and much on top. A month later sprouts had pushed through. I have put toradon on a wet stump and it sho nuff killed it.

Triclopyr was what I was referring to also, but I have seen glyphosate ding them up when spraying , although those were only about 10 ft tall. They didn’t die, however. And grew out of it fine. I am probably more attuned to seeing injury since it is what I do. Just don’t douse the trunk or any exposed roots and you’d probably be ok.
