Brakes are maintenance but a new engine hurts. Miles?

My 2012 was awesome. Only issue I ever had was a turbo issue that ended up being a tube issue. Had it retuned and it cured it. Buddy of mine begged me to sell it to him for months. I finally did a year ago and he runs the piss out of it daily hauling dump trailers and equipment trailers. He loves it. Currently about 260k miles

I’m at 177000 now. Upper oil pan was around 160000

2015 Ram 2500 Cummins. 184,000 miles. DEF went out at 56,000 warranty fixed it. Went out again at 122,000....it was deleted. I feel I've been lucky though....probably my last Diesel. Leaning HEAVY towards an F250 gas burner.Just been putting it off as dealers don't seem to want to haggle much....hoping a Republican will get in there this next time and things will turn around for the better.

‘19 f250 6.2 gas burner. I’ve never owned a 3/4 ton truck prior to this one but I’ll never go back to a 1/2 ton when it comes to pulling stuff. Night and day. I’ve not had it a year yet. I really like it.

2013 Chevy HD 4x4 with 6.0 gas burner. And I’m mean heavy on the gas burner!! I went from a 5.9 Cummins to the gas engine and was concerned with the pulling power. Absolutely no concern now. It will and has done anything I needed it to do with no problem. Did I mention it likes gas A LOT!!

My 2022 Ram 2500 6.4 hasn't given me any trouble. I'm at 58,000 miles. It does like the gas, I get around 14 mpg.

My neighbors 2011 F250 6.7 had complete fuel system failure that was somewhere around 6k to fix
A friends 2011 F250 6.7 had that plus numerous other problems and was a 14k fix. He fixed his and sold it and got a 2023 F350. Night and day difference in ride. Another firmed has a 2016 F250 6.7 and has a god run with his he’s around 250,000 on his the other two were right over 200,000

Guys I known with GMCs have had more problems and the guys I know have had the fewest problems with their Dodge’s. One firmed had a 2016 2600 dodge and that thing was sweet and smooth riding. Have it to his nephew. He hasn’t liked any of his trucks since and was gonna buy a new dodge 2500

If I had my way I’d have a custom diesel built.

We had a hotshot bring us our cone and grain head. He had a new F550 and that things had everything. His setup is one well built ride. Said it was tuned down 100hp but would pull better than any truck he’d owned and he’d owned a bunch. He had 5 running in his hotshot business. Said fords wer his go to with the least problems.

I keep wanting to sell mine but when I do I have no up needing it again. I’ll pull a dump trailer with 5 tons of gravel in it or similar load. I’ve pulled a fertilizer/lime buggy with 5 tons in it

My diesel trucks don't get the kind of gas mileage most owners want to claim they do... so the comparison in terms of operating cost is really close vs. gas. When Trump was in office it was clearly advantage to the Gas because gas was super cheap a few years ago. Diesel fuel costs more and the POS diesel motor they give you with the truck is a much more expensive problem. That's for the life of the truck.

Especially when they keep going into regen mode and nobody knows why.......getting 13mpg. That's one I'm dealing with right now.

Doh!

now if you want to go modifying.... I'm sure someone will chime in claiming they get 20mpg towing a bulldozer 80mph. The problem is we don't do all that. We are buying and driving new trucks... and that would be superdumbass to take one under warranty and mod it. And if you don't think that's superdumbass you have never experienced the bills that come along with major diesel repairs.

No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

I have a friend that has the V10 F250 and has no problems and pulls everything with it. 8 miles to the gallon no matter what he says

2011 RAM 2500 Cummins turbo diesel.
Had water pump replaced under warranty. Replaced brake pads last year.
Deleted it at 12,000 miles. Yes, 12,000 while still under warranty.
Still going strong.

I understand not modifying one under warranty but, you do realize most repairs are emissions related I hope.

Do y’all use an additive for your diesels

I use one every other tank fillup

You better bypass the eco mode now! I put a motor in my 6.4 hemi at 120,000 miles and 6,000 miles later the lifters were rattling again. I sold to a guy and was upfront about it. Said he wasn't worried about it because of the warranty. I went back to a diesel, but I found a low mileage 08 Duramax.

2022 3500 HD 6.6 liter. 40k miles and no problems, never go back to a 1500 again. Pull enclosed and open trailers all the time, roughly 6-10k lbs. 15 mpg no matter what. Will be looking to do an upgrade to the transmission in the next 10kiles to avoid an issues later.

I love my 350s but one’s an 88(7.3 IDI) and the other is a 95 power stroke. I’ve been priced out of the diesel market since about 99

. Yep, good question, and I should have answered. I'll generally be hauling a 27" pontoon boat from Lake Martin to the beach and back several times a year. I'll haul a JD 70hp tractor and implements with a 5th wheel a few hundred miles a several times a year. I also will be weighing it down with pallets of flooring or sod and hauling from Montgomery to MS/Fl. . at least every few months. The worst is the 7x14 enclosed trailer, tongue grouped, that is loaded with rock roofing slate (PA, OH, WV back to AL). Then, a UTV extra cab hauling it to hunting areas. I probably could get by with a 1500, but the extra would sure make those long trips a lot easier for pulling that heavy stuff.

May want to look into the silverado 1500 with the 3.0 duramax. Ive heard great things about that motor. Seen where guys have reported 20mpg pulling 20ft bassboats. Read up on them, everything ive seen has been nothing but good. It will likely be my next truck.

This is what I have. Just turned 50 thousand miles. My wife and I drove up through Huntland Tennessee into Winchester into Monteagle hit 24 back into Trenton Georgia got off at Ft Payne and ran 11 back to Attalla on home. Averaged 30.1 miles to the gallon. The sweet spot is 65 to 70 mph for peak performance

I know some of you all love your diesels, I get it. As a daily driver, I just don't drive that far. On an average day the farthest I may drive without stopping is 10 miles. Most of what I do is running into town, then going to different stores, most of the time less than a 1/4 mile from store to store. Then, 10 miles back home. I have heard diesels don't like that kind of "light" work. I know I may give up something with those long hauls, but the short drives just won't help that diesel at all.

The Fords I've looked at I like some of the features, but that infotainment system they have is not very intuitive for me. Something is going on at Ford with their engines and the body of the trucks that are concerning as well.

The Chevy/GMC, the tranny issues concern me. I do like the camera system and the feel of the trucks are ok.

The Dodge, well, I've never been a huge Dodge fan, but I have some friends that actually work their trucks and seem to like theirs. I haven't really driven one or sat in one, I'm not a Dodge fan, but I do like the tool box on the side of the truck, that is very convenient.

I did mention that I will be buying used from an auction.

I've got a 2016 regular cab F250 with a 6.2. Only have 50k miles on it so far and a water pump is all I've had to replace so far. I got 5 star tunes for it and it shifts alot better. I put 14 round bales on it last week and I think that all it wanted. No complaints and it pulls everything I need to.

The new GMC 6.6L gas 2500 comes with the Allison transmission, new for this year. It had previously only been offered in the diesel.
