Sauger or bream big enough to fillet are about only thing better so we eat crappie 95% time.

Vernon, you are not alone!

Never have fished for crappie, very rarely have fished for anything in my life.

Trout fishing in the White River - once. Very enjoyable and easy.

Bass fishing - maybe a handful of times.

Catfish - same

Bay fishing. - couple of times.

That's it. I prefer to do my fishing at Sextons in Cahaba Heights, but since I don't live in Birmingham anymore...

Titty bream fried whole (heads, guts and scales removed of course) is the best freshwater eating fish there is.

Crappie is the best . I live next to pickwick lake . Catch lot crappie in springtime . This year been slow . They too small to keep . Catfish is really good here if u catch in spring time while water is still cold . Caught mess of blue from bank two weeks ago 10 to 15 pders . Keep them males . Turn lose the females . Full of eggs . First blues I ve caught . Usually channel cats here all u catch here . When creeks get up from heavy rain you can catch all u want where they feed into river if water is muddy . Best fun ever . Crappie really do taste the best

Sauger are my favorite but it’s been awhile they’re not around like back in the 80s

Never had bream while fired but hear it’s good. Crappie I have often and enjoy eating them.

Sauger is the holy grail of fish filets from freshwater,
Flathead belly and head chunks
Then crappie and shell cracker
But the ultimate fish for a fish fry is a spoonbill catfish come on!( protected species cause of dumbass dam snaggers).

I have caught crappie trolling, spider rigging, pulling crankbaits, sight casting under lights, straight lining, jigging, livescoping, wading, casting artificials, etc but nothing tops fishing minnows under a cork. Something about watching that cork slowly sink out of sight is very satisfying. They usually even allow you to set your beer down in time to get them. And yes, they are very good eating.

I'm going to watch some YouTube videos on how to fish for crappie. When I was a kid I had a Zebco 33 rod & reel that seemed to be easy to use even though I didn't really have any opportunity to fish (my dad never fished and we didn't live near any water). I know that fishermen don't use such a humble setup now but rather use far more expensive and complicated reels that require a lot of hand coordination to keep the line from getting all knotted up.
