This is my grandfather's Ithica 12ga that was given to me. I don't believe it's worth much to the outside world but would like to shoot it if able to safely do so. Is it worth having the stock replaced that is split? Any gunsmith recommendations in the Birmingham area that can take a look at this a deem if it's safe to fire as is or needs work? I'd love to shoot dove with it if I could get it looked at at repaired. Thanks!

Stockmakers are few and far between in this area of the country. Might look in they website for the American Custom Gunmaker Guild and find someone who can work on it.

You could try Numrich Gun Parts to see if they have a stock for it. I've previously found a lot of parts for old guns, including stocks, there.

Youtube has many videos. Larry Porterfield from Midway has one too. Not hard at all.

I would just make a simple call to these guys in Memphis and ask them about it and seek some advice. These guys frequented all the gun shows around here pre-pandemic. Super nice older gentlemen. They might even have one. Longshot, however the amount of this type stuff they have is totally stupid:

thats what I was thinking. I think he drills a hole perpendicular to the crack, inserts a dowel and some glue and uses a vice.

One way of repairing a cracked stock, but an old military repair was clamps, glue and brass all thread in place of a dowel.

Remove the stock and open that crack up as much as possible and then squeeze in as much epoxy as you can
Something like JB Weld will work or Brownells has a epoxy gun with mixing tubes that go down to a fine point to allow getting into small spaces
When you get the epoxy distributed inside as good as possible then clamp it tight and let it sit for a couple days to cure
Yes it will have that line of epoxy to show some but the shotgun will be shootable again

W H McGuns in Humboldt Tn repaired a splint forearm for me. Can’t tell it was ever split after repaired.

Took a Beretta 10 gauge side by side with a BADLY split stock (pencil would fit in crack and move around) to Quints Sporting Goods in Saraland. He repaired it and installed a new buttplate and recoil pad. Looks factory and have to look to find where old crack was. I was EXTREMELY pleased with the end result and the cost was more than fair. I've found a new gunsmith
