In the mountains you might hear one 2 miles easy and not hear one 200 yards. Depends on the terra.

In the mountains you might hear one 2 miles easy and not hear one 200 yards. Depends on the terra. This is my experience too. About 30 years ago on the Coosa WMA, a cold, still morning, I heard a turkey that I later determined was 2 miles away by looking at the map. I've heard a lot in the range of over a mile. There won't be but a few days in a season where you can hear like that, but when it is cold and still and clear, the sound will really carry. You have to be up very high to get the full effect, and it's also best early in the season when the leaves aren't on the hardwoods. I can still hear one a good distance in a tree, but the length I can hear one on the ground has gone down a lot. I've noticed lately that I sort of feel the gobble if he is on the ground at distance instead of hearing it. I've heard several this year that I was only 50% sure was a turkey, but then heard him again and confirmed it.

Funny thing up here , after the leaves put on, one on the ground , just over a hill or around the bend may not be heard at 100 yards or so. Gotta slow down and listen close or you flush them.

My hearing sucks so bad that if I hear one I need to sit down right where I am, ha.

the linear side of an acre is 208.7 feet - there are 5280 feet in 1 mile ... doing the math, you'd be able to hear a gobbling bird across 25 acres (with no terrain obstructions, of course)

Depends. To me Rios in Texas mesquite were closer than they sounded. But could hear a very long ways at times. Several miles I bet. No leaves on trees here at the farm, a mile or better. Leaves on the trees less than a mile, maybe closer to a 1/2 mile.

In the south with high humidity over a mile.
Out west about 2 miles. I think you meant low humidity. No I meant the humidity is higher here so you can’t hear them at 2 miles like out west. 😉
