You can find the Lexus 470 for reasonable. It’s essentially a v8 4 runner that’s more off road capable.

Nothing wrong with the Lexus for most off road situations you're likely to encounter but the Lexus is definitely not more capable off road. It's slightly less capable in the extreme conditions the 4RUNNER was designed for. Youtube is full of videos comparing the two.

I recently found a GX for a friend and I wouldn't hesitate to own one myself but there are some things to consider. The Lexus requires premium fuel. The V-8 has about the same HP as the V-6 in the 4RUNNER and the GX requires a timing belt that post 2004 4RUNNERs do not. You're gonna get a little less gas mileage with the GX.

As far as traction, the Acura MDX AWD surprised me. I am not saying it is a truck because it's not, but I can attest to traction on a semi froze muddy South Dakota road. We were pheasant hunting and hit a spot where there was a Ford truck half in one ditch and a chevy half in the other. They may have been in 2wd when they slid off the road, but the MDX split both of them and never spun a tire. I am sure clearance would eventually be an issue along with objects flying up in the undercarriage, but would be fine if you planned to stick to the field and clean woods roads. With all of that said, I have a sierra and an old jeep, but the mdx would work for my public land hunting.

On my third Landcruiser. Excellent vehicles both on and off road. Even on the older ones, everything works. Only complaint is the gas mileage.

I’ll give a vote for general capabilities of an xterra, assuming Pro4x model. I’ve been happy with my Frontier Pro4x which shares many mechanical aspects. Watch for certain year ranges that have known transmission issues. When I have my truck rear diff locked in 4WD it will pretty much go wherever I have any business going with the right tires.

Best I recall a 4Runner is maybe 5’8 with seats down, so RAV4 will be smaller I’m sure.

Sounds like personally I'd be looking at older 4runners or Jeep Cherokees, even with the same or similar mileage the 4runner will almost certainly cost more but like someone mentioned the things are bulletproof. I had an 07 I tried my absolute best to kill but never did.

1999 Ford Ranger/Mazda B3000 or B4000. Mine is a 99 B3000 Extended Cab. These are hard to find just for this reason. I know several guys who have them for this purpose and one guy who just bought a Jem of one for a backup to his original.

Another. It’s for the GX. It’s got the 4.7 engine and is bulletproof. It runs just fine on regular gas. They just say that to boost their performance numbers. I just sold a 2012 with about 200k miles for 13k$. Ran like a brand new one

I'm trying to figure out what is wrong with the RAM. Just put a camper shell on it you could sleep in the back on a cot.

How would anyone haul all their camping AND hunting stuff out there in some kinda compact SUV? Like Jed Clampett?

This is kinda what I was thinking. Truck with a bed cover seems like a much better option to me.
