The speed bead mounts are as low as it gets. Rib mounts are lower than receiver mounts, but a rear iron/notch sight sits lower to the rib. The receiver is the highest point on a shotgun. Anything taller than the receiver means your eye comes up higher than the rib, no matter what.

I had a battery die on a RD and cost me a bird because I couldn’t get it off and couldn’t see the sights or rib with it mounted. That’ll never happen again. I was always having to clean leaves, dew, mud off of it, too. I’ve yet to miss a bird with a bead or open sights. A scope is better than a RD: at least you have a reticle that works all the time, and you can use the magnification for something.

I may mount a peep to my TC single shot…..best of both worlds most likely.

Finally got around to getting my rig cerakoted and dipped. Austin at Inverness Outdoors did a great job and was great about communicating timelines, etc. Very pleased with how it turned out.

Titanium cerakote on the metal? I’m gonna try an RD on at least one gun again, as the OS setup it has don’t have quite enough elevation adjustment without more parts/work. It’ll just be an RD that hasn’t let me down on other stuff. Equipment messing up a gimme on a bird is hugely frustrating. The nut behind the trigger is always a known issue. wink

FWIW: I’ve always ‘believed’ the 870 20ga receiver was too thin at the rear for good tap/screw depth? If not, and someone would make a solid mount for the curve/drop at the rear, you could likely get a dot very low to the rib/receiver. Right now, if I decide to RD my 870 20, it’ll probably get a rib mount.

OTOH, my turkey guns are turkey guns ONLY, and my eye just needs to be where it needs to be to kill turkeys….not shoot quail. It doesn’t matter if that’s down on the rib or using a lower cheek weld to get behind a dot or sights that sit higher. It’s rifle shooting, not shotgunning. wink

All good points. When I drilled and tapped the receiver, there was plenty of meat for full engagement. The mount is a Sumtoy mount that is machined to follow the contours of the receiver and I haven't had any problems with retention.

Definitely a nut here behind the trigger. Screwed up plenty of birds.

Man that's a fine looking 870.

There is plenty of meat at the rear of a 20 ga 870 receiver. The problem is when using a factory 4 screw base and the holes that are roughly forward of the ejection port. There's a shoulder in there the barrel extension butts againts and the receiver is really thin there.

The color, I believe, is called "patriot brown" but it's more green than brown in my opinion.
