Yours very well might have been 52. Not saying it wasn't. I've got a buddy that I know for a fact, filleted and ate a line class world record wahoo and didnt find out until two years after the fact. So, it does indeed happen, and I'm sure it happens way more often than you'd think.

I think the record when I caught mine was 36 or so. When we put the fish, fillet and whatever guts we could scrape up on the scale it was right at 35. Close. Maybe a record. Maybe not. Likely. Likely not. Dunno. The fish ate well, for sure.

It was so long ago I was still using film and starting to use slides. Digital cameras and phones weren't around. One of the captains we went with talked about his "fathometer" and how as a kid he bounced lead weights covered with grease on a rope to the bottom to find hard bottom.

I'm going to go take a good slug of Geritol to wash down my Doan's pills and have my nap now. LOL

Salt probably a Grouper not sure what it weighed but big.
Fresh was a Blue cat on Wilson lake that bottomed out my scale at 50lbs.
I was bass fishing and called my shot on an old dock piling sticking out of the water. Bass were on wood that day and I was doing great on a spinner bait. I actually called my shot when I told my buddy " watch this cast, when I make this spinner bait hit that wood Im gonna kill it and let it flutter, bet you a fish hits it" Fish hit it alright. Rod butt ran up my ribs and somehow hung under my bicep which proceeded to quickly turn black and blue. About 30 min later we got it in. Spinner bait was destroyed, Boat carpet was slimmed, I was tired.

Immediately was the onset!!! Longest hour of my life. I was cramped up, sweating, and almost to the point of convulsions. Adrenalin is a powerful thing! It took 3 days to get over the soreness.

We did a trip out of Venice La. around 20 years ago, we hooked 3 yellowfins within 5 minutes tied up to a shrimp boat, took almost 4 hours to get all three to the boat when we hit the scales we had 182, 172 and 135lbs shark to a bite out of the 172( mine) not sure how we lost in meat/blood
